Jack Benny Program

The Jack Benny Program was a long-running and highly influential American radio and television comedy series that starred the legendary comedian Jack Benny. Spanning over three decades, from 1932 to 1965, the show was renowned for its clever writing, ensemble cast, and Benny’s iconic portrayal of a boastful, penny-pinching and musically inept entertainer, all of which he was the exact opposite of in real life.

One of the longest running and most successful comedies in the history of radio, The Jack Benny Show was loosely organized as a situation comedy. Often beginning with an opening period of repartee among cast members, it continued with a comic skit featuring many of the supporting characters who became household names.

The Stars

At the heart of the show was Jack Benny, who played a fictionalized version of himself - a pompous, stingy, and untalented violinist who was constantly the butt of jokes from his talented supporting cast.

Benny’s co-stars included the sarcastic Mary Livingstone (Benny’s real-life wife, Sadie Marks), the African-American valet Rochester (Eddie Anderson), the band leader Phil Harris, the tenors Kenny Baker and Dennis Day, and the portly announcer Don Wilson.

These characters would often engage in witty banter and running gags that revolved around Benny’s miserly nature, his vanity, and his poor violin playing.
