Other Information

Allen worked hard to produce a show that incorporated the events of the day. He was an avid reader of nine different newspapers and used clippings to help build a script. Often he used lesser-known news items to create a comic centerpiece for his show.

The show was also famous for its long-running “feud” with fellow comedian Jack Benny, with the two engaging in a series of playful jabs and parodies of each other’s programs. It began by accident, but listeners were so enthralled by it that the writers for both comedians were called together to stretch it out. It became a legendary feud though the two entertainers were very amicable. In fact, the two appeared in two films together – Love Thy Neighbor and It’s In the Bag!

The Fred Allen Show was known for its battles with network censors, as Allen often pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable on the radio.

Despite these challenges, The Fred Allen Show remained one of the most popular and influential comedy programs of its era, with Allen’s unique brand of humor and social commentary resonating with audiences across the country. The show’s impact can still be felt in modern comedy, with its influence evident in programs like Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In and Saturday Night Live.
