Bob Hope Show

1901–1955 · 63 episodes · 379 listens

The Bob Hope Show was a long-running and beloved American radio and television comedy series that featured the legendary entertainer Bob Hope as the star. Spanning nearly 80 years, Hope’s career encompassed vaudeville, network radio, television, film, and USO tours, making him one of the most prolific and influential comedians of the 20th century.

The show’s origins can be traced back to Hope’s early days in vaudeville and Broadway productions in the 1920s. As he transitioned to radio in the 1930s, Hope began hosting regular series for NBC, including the Woodbury Soap Hour in 1937 and the Pepsodent Show Starring Bob Hope in 1938. These early radio programs established Hope’s signature style of rapid-fire one-liners, self-deprecating humor, and musical collaborations with big band leaders like Shep Fields.

In the 1950s, as television became the dominant medium, Hope seamlessly adapted his comedic talents to the small screen. He began hosting regular television specials for NBC, often sponsored by major corporations like Frigidaire, General Motors, Chrysler, and Texaco. These specials, which ran for decades, featured a mix of sketch comedy, musical performances, and celebrity guests. Hope’s Christmas specials, in particular, became beloved annual traditions, often featuring duets of “Silver Bells” with younger female stars.

Hope hosted the Academy Awards show 19 times, more than any other host. He also appeared in many stage productions and television roles and wrote 14 books. The song “Thanks for the Memory” was his signature tune. He was praised for his comedic timing, specializing in one-liners and rapid-fire delivery of jokes that were often self-deprecating.

Between 1941 and 1991, Hope made 57 tours for the United Service Organizations (USO), entertaining military personnel around the world. His deep respect for the armed forces and willingness to perform for troops, even in war zones, cemented his status as a beloved American icon.

The Stars

Bob Hope was the undisputed star of The Bob Hope Show, both on radio and television. A British-born American comedian, actor, entertainer, and producer, Hope’s career spanned nearly 80 years and included appearances in more than 70 films, as well as countless stage productions and television roles.

Hope’s comedic talents were complemented by a rotating cast of supporting players, including longtime collaborators like Jerry Colonna, who often appeared as Hope’s comic sidekick. Over the years, The Bob Hope Show also featured guest appearances from a wide array of Hollywood stars, from Bing Crosby and Cary Grant to Raquel Welch and Johnny Carson.

Key Dates

  • The Bob Hope Show first debuted on radio in 1934, with Hope’s first regular series for NBC being the Woodbury Soap Hour in 1937. The following year, The Pepsodent Show Starring Bob Hope began, and Hope signed a ten-year contract with the show’s sponsor, Lever Brothers.
  • Hope’s transition to television began in the 1950s, with the comedian hosting his first regular TV specials for NBC in April 1950. These specials, often sponsored by major corporations, continued for decades, with Hope’s popular Christmas shows becoming annual favorites.
  • In the latter stages of his career, Hope’s television appearances became less frequent, though he continued to make guest appearances on shows like The Golden Girls and The Simpsons. His final television special, Laughing with the Presidents, aired in November 1996, with host Tony Danza helping Hope present a retrospective of his interactions with various U.S. presidents.
  • Bob Hope retired from public life in 1998 and died in 2003 at the age of 100, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy as one of the most iconic and influential entertainers of the 20th century.

Other Information

Hope’s unwavering support for the U.S. military and his tireless efforts entertaining troops during wartime were a defining aspect of his career. Between 1941 and 1991, he made 57 tours for the USO, performing for soldiers around the world, even in active war zones. This dedication earned him the nickname “G.I. Joe” and the honor of being named an “Honorary Veteran” by an act of Congress in 1997.

Beyond his work in radio, television, and film, Hope was also an avid golfer, playing in as many as 150 charity tournaments a year. He even founded the Bob Hope Classic golf tournament, which made history in 1995 when he teed off in a foursome with three U.S. presidents: Gerald Ford, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.

Over the course of his long and illustrious career, Hope received numerous accolades and honors, including the Sylvanus Thayer Award from the United States Military Academy at West Point, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the TCA Career Achievement Award from the Television Critics Association.

Even after his retirement, Hope’s legacy continued to be celebrated, with the establishment of the Bob Hope American Patriot Award by President George W. Bush in 2003. Today, Bob Hope’s enduring popularity and influence on American comedy and popular culture are a testament to his unparalleled talent and enduring impact on the entertainment industry.
