The Cavalcade Of America

1935–1953 · 200 episodes · 178 listens

The Cavalcade of America was an anthology drama series that was sponsored by the DuPont chemical company. It was initially broadcast on radio from 1935 to 1953, and later adapted for television from 1952 to 1957.

The series documented historical events and the lives of influential figures, often with feel-good dramatizations that emphasized the triumph of the human spirit against all odds.

The show’s format was designed to improve DuPont’s public image after the company faced scrutiny for its role in World War I profiteering. Each episode featured stories of individual courage, initiative, and achievement, with the goal of portraying DuPont as a company dedicated to humanitarian progress and technological innovation that improved the lives of Americans. The company’s motto, “Maker of better things for better living through chemistry,” was read at the beginning of each program.

The Stars

While The Cavalcade of America did not have a regular cast of stars, it was able to attract numerous Broadway and Hollywood actors to appear in its dramatizations. Some of the notable performers who appeared on the series include Walter Huston, who hosted the show for a period in 1944-1945, as well as actors such as Preston Foster, Richard Gaines, James Seay, Robert Foulk, and Raymond Greenleaf.

Key Dates

  • The Cavalcade of America debuted on October 9, 1935, and aired on CBS until May 29, 1939.
  • The series then moved to NBC, where it continued until March 31, 1953.

Other Information

During its run, the show was also adapted for television, with 133 episodes airing on NBC from 1952 to 1953 and then on ABC from 1953 to 1957. The television version was known as DuPont Cavalcade Theater and DuPont Theater during its final year.

In addition to its dramatic presentations, The Cavalcade of America occasionally featured musical episodes and condensed biographies of popular composers. The series was able to attract prominent writers such as Arthur Miller, Norman Rosten, and Robert Tallman to contribute scripts, although some listeners pointed out historical inaccuracies in the dramatizations.

DuPont’s sponsorship of The Cavalcade of America was an early example of corporate image-building through the use of radio and television. By associating the company with stories of American heroism and progress, DuPont was able to distance itself from its reputation as a “merchant of death” and promote its products as beneficial to the public. The series also helped to elevate the prestige of chemistry and history in the public consciousness.

There are at least 730 episodes of The Cavalcade of America available for listening allowing modern audiences to experience this unique blend of corporate sponsorship and historical drama.
