Destination Freedom

1948–1951 · 71 episodes · 11 listens

Destination Freedom was a dramatic anthology series that aired on WMAQ radio in Chicago from 1948 to 1951. The show was created by African-American journalist and author Richard Durham, who sought to reeducate the masses on the image of African American society, which he believed was tainted with inaccurate and derogatory stereotypes.

The series presented biographical histories of prominent African Americans, such as George Washington Carver, Satchel Paige, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Lena Horne. The scripts were written by Durham, and the show featured a diverse cast of African-American performers, including Oscar Brown Jr., Vernon Jarrett, Janice Kingslow, Fred Pinkard, and Studs Terkel.

The Stars

The series featured a rotating cast of talented African-American actors, including Oscar Brown Jr., who portrayed a wide range of characters, from historical figures to everyday people. Vernon Jarrett, a journalist and civil rights activist, also lent his voice to the show, bringing depth and authenticity to the stories. Janice Kingslow and Fred Pinkard were also regular performers, showcasing their versatility and range as actors.

Key Dates

  • Destination Freedom premiered on June 27, 1948, on WMAQ radio in Chicago.
  • The first set of episodes ran until 1950, and the second series of shows aired from 1950 to 1951.
  • The show was sponsored by The Chicago Defender and the Chicago Urban League during its run.

Other Information

In addition to its focus on African-American history and culture, Destination Freedom also addressed themes of social progress and the ongoing struggle for racial justice. The series earned strong support from civil rights organizations and offered employment opportunities to a wide range of African-American performers.

The show was the recipient of a Peabody Award in 1950 for its performance of “The Sorrow Songs” episode, which featured spirituals. Two early recordings, “A Garage in Gainesville” and “Execution Awaited,” are also listed in the National Recording Registry, highlighting the show’s cultural significance and historical importance.

After its run, Destination Freedom was largely forgotten for decades until some of the transcripts were rediscovered, and the characters voiced by Fred Pinkard, Oscar Brown Jr., Wezlyn Tilden, and Janice Kingslow were heard once more. The series has since been recognized as a groundbreaking and influential work in the history of African-American radio programming.
