The Stars

At the heart of The Eddie Cantor Show was, of course, Eddie Cantor himself.  A skilled comedian, singer, and dancer, Cantor captivated audiences with his quick wit, infectious energy, and ability to seamlessly blend humor and music.  He was often joined by a talented supporting cast, including his longtime collaborator and friend, the legendary comedian Jimmy Durante.  Together, Cantor and Durante delighted listeners with their hilarious banter and memorable musical performances.

Harry Einstein who was a Boston Advertising Executive but who also enjoyed a little air time with a Greek character he’d created called Nick Parkyakakas. Cantor heard him, thought he was funny, and offered him a spot on his show. He was a great success and became a firm favorite with audiences, as did another of Cantors discoveries, a guy by the name of Bert Gordon who became a nations favorite as Barney Gorodetsky, the Mad Russian.

Throughout his career, Cantor was known for his political activism and social consciousness. He used his radio platform to champion causes such as the fight against polio, raising millions of dimes for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “March of Dimes” campaign. Cantor also spoke out against antisemitism and other forms of discrimination, often facing backlash from sponsors and networks for his outspoken views.

In addition to his radio work, Cantor enjoyed a successful career in film, starring in several popular musicals and comedies, including the 1930 film Whoopee! He also appeared in various television programs in the 1950s, including as a regular guest host on The Colgate Comedy Hour.

Despite his many achievements, Cantor’s life and career were not without their challenges. The 1953 Warner Bros. biopic The Eddie Cantor Story was criticized for its inaccurate portrayal of the entertainer, with actor Keefe Brasselle’s performance described as a caricature rather than a true representation of Cantor.

Nevertheless, Eddie Cantor’s legacy as a pioneering entertainer and social activist endures. His infectious energy, comedic genius, and unwavering commitment to using his platform for the greater good have cemented his place as one of the most beloved and influential figures of the golden age of radio and entertainment.
