Parker Fennelly

1891–1988 · Northeast Harbor, Maine, U.S.

In the golden age of radio, few performers captured the essence of the crusty New England Yankee quite like Parker W. Fennelly. A versatile character actor whose distinctive voice and comedic timing made him a beloved figure in American entertainment, Fennelly carved out a unique niche that spanned radio, television, and film for over five decades.

Early Life and Theatrical Beginnings

Born on October 22, 1891, in Northeast Harbor, Maine, Parker Fennelly was the son of gardener Nathan Fennelly and Estelle Dolliver Fennelly. From an early age, he showed a passion for performance, studying classical acting in Boston. His theatrical journey began in the early 20th century, touring with Shakespeare players and stock companies. In 1915 and 1916, he traveled with the Maud Scheerer Shakespeare Players on the Midway Chautauqua Circuit, laying the groundwork for his future career. Fennelly's theatrical ambitions led him to form the Parker Fennelly Duo with his wife, Catherine Reynolds Fennelly, presenting short plays and readings between 1921 and 1923. His Broadway career was equally impressive, with notable appearances in productions like Mr. Pitt (1924), Yours, A. Lincoln (1942), and The Southwest Corner (1955). Beyond acting, he also demonstrated his versatility by directing and writing for the stage.

The Golden Age of Radio

Fennelly truly found his calling in radio, becoming synonymous with the quintessential New England character. His most famous role was Titus Moody on Fred Allen's "Allen's Alley" segment, where he would famously open with the line, "Howdy, Bub". But his radio repertoire was far more extensive, including memorable characters across numerous programs:

  • Lawyer Tucker in Barrister
  • Pa in Ma and Pa
  • Dad in Mother and Dad
  • Mike Hagen in Valiant Lady

His ability to embody the crusty, witty Yankee archetype made him a radio staple, and in 1960, he even recorded Moody Speaking, a series of one and five-minute radio vignettes.

Expanding to Television and Film

As television emerged, Fennelly seamlessly transitioned to the new medium. He made numerous live television appearances in the early 1950s and played Mr. Purdy on The Headmaster from 1970 to 1971. His film career, though less extensive, included roles in movies like The Trouble with Harry (1955) and The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966). Perhaps his most recognizable television work was as the Pepperidge Farm spokesman between 1956 and 1977, delivering the iconic slogan "Pepperidge Farm remembers" in his distinctive New England accent.

Legacy and Personal Life

Parker Fennelly was more than just a performer; he was a cultural icon who personified a specific American archetype. His characters were beloved for their authenticity, wit, and charm. He was married to Catherine Deane, whom he met in 1918 while performing in a stock company, and they had two daughters and a son. Fennelly continued performing until late in life, with his last film role in How to Frame a Figg in 1971. He passed away on January 22, 1988, at the age of 96, leaving behind a rich legacy in American entertainment.
