Damon Runyon Theater, The

1949 · 52 episodes · 254 listens

The Damon Runyon Theater was a radio anthology series that dramatized the short stories of acclaimed American writer Damon Runyon. Runyon was best known for his tales of the colorful characters that inhabited the Broadway underworld during the Prohibition era, with their distinctive vernacular speech patterns and nicknames. The series brought these vibrant stories to life through weekly radio adaptations, offering listeners a glimpse into Runyon’s unique fictional world.

Debuting in October 1948, The Damon Runyon Theater ran for one season, with 52 episodes produced by Alan Ladd’s Mayfair Transcription Company for syndication to local radio stations. The series was hosted and narrated by actor John Brown, who portrayed the unnamed first-person protagonist known simply as “Broadway,” a bystander who observed the antics of Runyon’s larger-than-life gangsters, gamblers, and showgirls.

The Stars

While the series did not feature any regular lead actors, it boasted an impressive ensemble cast that brought Runyon’s colorful characters to life. Notable performers included Alan Reed, Luis Van Rooten, Joseph DuVal, Gerald Mohr, Frank Lovejoy, Herb Vigran, Sheldon Leonard, William Conrad, Jeff Chandler, Lionel Stander, and Sidney Miller. These skilled character actors seamlessly inhabited Runyon’s distinctive dialogue and personas, capturing the humor, pathos, and moral ambiguity that defined his stories.

Key Dates

  • The Damon Runyon Theater debuted on October 3, 1948 and ran for one season, concluding on September 25, 1949.
  • The series was then rerun until 1951. During its original run, the show dramatized 52 of Runyon’s short stories, adapted for radio by writer Russell S. Hughes. All are available to listen to.

Other Information

In addition to the radio series, Runyon’s works have been adapted for the stage and screen numerous times over the years. His short story “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” was the basis for the classic Broadway musical Guys and Dolls, which was later made into a 1955 film starring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, and Jean Simmons.

Other Runyon tales that have been adapted for film include “Little Miss Marker,” “The Lemon Drop Kid,” and “A Slight Case of Murder.”

Runyon’s distinctive narrative style, which avoided the past tense in favor of the present, and his use of colorful slang and recurring character types, have had a lasting influence on American popular culture. The adjective “Runyonesque” has entered the lexicon to describe his unique brand of urban folklore.

After his death in 1946, Runyon’s friend Walter Winchell helped establish the Damon Runyon Cancer Memorial Fund to support cancer research, and the first-ever telethon was hosted by Milton Berle in 1949 to raise funds for the foundation.

Though The Damon Runyon Theater had a relatively brief run, it remains a beloved example of old-time radio’s ability to capture the essence of a literary master’s work.

The series offered listeners an immersive experience in Runyon’s vibrant, larger-than-life world, showcasing the enduring appeal of his distinctive storytelling style.
