Martin & Lewis Show

The Martin & Lewis Show was a popular radio comedy-variety program in the United States that aired on the NBC Radio Network from April 3, 1949, to July 14, 1953. The show starred the legendary comedy duo of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, who were virtually unknown to a radio audience at the time.

The program featured a mix of comedy sketches, musical performances, and guest appearances, with Martin providing the smooth singing and Lewis bringing his signature manic, slapstick humor.

Despite the duo’s success in nightclubs and films, the radio show struggled to fully capture the visual elements that made their act so popular, as Reinehr and Swartz noted in their old-time radio reference book, “the program was never as successful as the network had hoped, because much of Martin and Lewis’s comedy was visual.”

The Stars

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were the undisputed stars of the show, with Martin playing the straight man and Lewis as the “squeaky-voiced idiot who heckled everybody in sight.” The duo’s chemistry and contrasting personalities were the driving force behind the show’s success, as they played off each other’s strengths to create a unique and entertaining dynamic.

Key Dates

• The show’s initial run was scheduled to begin on January 16, 1949, but was delayed until April due to the network’s preparations.
• The Martin & Lewis Show debuted on April 3, 1949, and ran for over four years.
• The final episode aired on July 14, 1953.
• Over the course of its run, the program underwent some changes, including the addition of writers Norman Lear and Ed Simmons in 1950 to help craft the comedy material.

Other Information

The show was sponsored by Chesterfield cigarettes and Anacin, and it gained popularity with listeners, being named the Favorite Radio Comedy Show in Radio-TV Mirror magazine’s 1952 poll.

However, not all critics were impressed, with one newspaper writer commenting in 1952 that the show and Red Skelton’s radio program were “lacking in comparison to their television counterparts,” with “stale and grisly” jokes and no opportunity for the duo to save themselves with “mugging or pratfalls.”

Despite the mixed reviews, The Martin & Lewis Show was a significant part of the duo’s rise to fame, helping to establish them as one of the most popular comedy acts of the era.

The show’s success also led to a lucrative five-year radio and television contract for Martin and Lewis, further cementing their status as entertainment icons.
