The Adventures Of Ellery Queen

1943–1948 · 14 episodes · 22 listens

The Adventures Of Ellery Queen was a popular radio detective program that aired in the United States from 1939 to 1948. The show was a mystery drama that invited listeners to try and solve the case alongside the show’s protagonist, the brilliant amateur sleuth Ellery Queen.

The program grew out of the combined efforts of producer-director George Zachary and writers Frederic Dannay and Manfred Lee, who created the Ellery Queen character. Initially, Dannay and Lee wrote the scripts, with Zachary handling the production. In 1945, Anthony Boucher replaced Dannay and collaborated with Lee on the writing.

The show’s format was unique for the time, challenging the audience to solve the mystery along with Ellery Queen. At a certain point in each episode, the scripted portion would stop, and the “armchair detectives” in the audience would be invited to identify the culprit based on the clues presented. While the guest panelists were often wrong in their solutions, their participation was a key part of the show’s appeal.

The Stars

The role of Ellery Queen was portrayed by several actors over the course of the program’s run, including Hugh Marlowe, Carleton Young, Sydney Smith, Lawrence Dobkin, and Howard Culver.

The producers made a conscious effort to maintain a sense of mystery around the character by not identifying the actors who played him.

Ellery Queen’s father, Inspector Richard Queen, was played by Santos Ortega, Bill Smith, and Herb Butterfield.

Ellery’s secretary, Nikki Porter, was portrayed by a succession of actresses including Marion Shockley, Barbara Terrell, Gertrude Warner, Charlotte Keane, Virginia Gregg, and Kaye Brinker.

Other Information

The show was based on the popular Ellery Queen mystery novels and short stories and spawned several short stories that were published in magazines like Radio and Television Mirror. These stories featured the radio program’s version of the Ellery Queen character.

While the radio program ended in 1948, the Ellery Queen character went on to appear in a television series in the 1970s, as well as numerous other adaptations over the years.
