I Love a Mystery

1943–1950 · 113 episodes · 92 listens

I Love a Mystery was an American radio drama series that captivated audiences from 1939 to 1944, blending elements of mystery, adventure, and supernatural horror. Created by Carlton E. Morse, the show followed the thrilling exploits of three friends who ran a detective agency and traveled the world in search of excitement and intrigue. The series stood in stark contrast to Morse’s other famous creation, the long-running domestic drama One Man’s Family, offering listeners a dose of high-stakes adventure and spine-tingling suspense.

The central characters of I Love a Mystery were Jack Packard, Doc Long, and Reggie York, who first met as mercenary soldiers fighting against Japanese forces in China. Their paths crossed again in San Francisco, where they decided to form the A-1 Detective Agency. With the motto “No job too tough, no adventure too baffling,” the trio embarked on a series of cases that took them to exotic locales and pitted them against an array of colorful and often sinister adversaries.

What set I Love a Mystery apart from other radio dramas of its time was its unique blend of genres. While primarily a mystery series, it often incorporated elements of adventure stories and supernatural horror, creating a rich and unpredictable narrative landscape. Morse’s vivid imagination and skillful writing brought to life elaborate, sometimes bizarre plots that kept listeners on the edge of their seats.

The show’s format evolved over its run, starting with 15-minute episodes before expanding to 30-minute installments. Each story arc typically spanned multiple episodes, allowing for complex narratives and cliffhanger endings that left audiences eagerly anticipating the next installment.

The Stars

The cast of I Love a Mystery underwent several changes throughout its run, with different actors taking on the main roles over the years. Jack Packard, the tough and charismatic leader of the group, was portrayed by various actors including Michael Raffetto, Russell Thorson, Jay Novello, Jim Bannon, and John McIntire. Jack was often the first to solve the mysteries, and his character was notable for having an edge uncommon among radio heroes of the time.

Doc Long, the boisterous Texan known for his fighting spirit and comic relief, was played primarily by Barton Yarborough, with Jim Boles taking over the role in later years. Doc’s larger-than-life personality and penchant for boasting provided a perfect counterpoint to Jack’s more serious demeanor.

Reggie York, the English member of the trio renowned for his great strength, was initially portrayed by Walter Paterson. After Paterson’s tragic suicide in 1942, the character was briefly played by Tony Randall before being written out of the series entirely. Reggie’s departure marked a significant shift in the show’s dynamic.

Gloria Blondell joined the cast as Jerry Booker, the agency’s secretary, following Reggie’s exit. Her role was expanded to fill the void left by Reggie’s absence, adding a new dimension to the team’s adventures.

  • March 29, 1940, marked the end of the show’s initial run on NBC.
  • It soon found a new home on the Blue Network, where it aired from September 30, 1940, to June 29, 1942.
  • The series then moved to CBS, where it ran from March 22, 1943, to December 29, 1944, concluding its original run.

Other Information

Sponsorship: The show was initially sponsored by Fleischmann’s Yeast before Procter & Gamble took over sponsorship for products like Oxydol and Ivory Soap during its CBS run.

Theme Music: The Haunting Valse Triste by Jean Sibelius served as the program’s theme music, setting the tone for the mysterious adventures to come.

Film Adaptations: The popularity of I Love a Mystery led to several film adaptations. In 1945, a mystery film of the same name was released, starring Jim Bannon as Jack and Barton Yarborough as Doc. Two more movies followed in 1946: The Devil’s Mask and The Unknown.

Television: A TV movie, which also served as a pilot, was produced in 1967. It starred Les Crane as Jack, David Hartman as Doc, and Hagan Beggs as Reggie. The movie was based on the radio episode “The Thing That Cries in the Night” but wasn’t aired until 1973.

Influence on Pop Culture: I Love a Mystery had a lasting impact on popular culture. It was an influence in the early development stages of the long-running Hanna-Barbera franchise Scooby-Doo, particularly when it was being conceived as a live-action series under the working titles Mysteries Five and Who’s Scared.

Comic Book Adaptation: The radio show’s popularity extended to other media, with a comic book version adapted by artist Don Sherwood.

Controversial Elements: The show occasionally courted controversy. Actor Peter Lorre once sent a letter threatening legal action because a character named Michel in two of the serials sounded too much like him. The character was subsequently dropped from the series.

Parental Concerns: “The Temple of the Vampires” was the first serial to prompt concerned parents to write letters to the network, expressing worry about its effect on children. This highlights the show’s ability to create genuinely frightening scenarios, even by adult standards of the time.

Character Development: The show’s writer, Carlton E. Morse, provided rich backstories for his characters, even if they weren’t explicitly stated on air. For instance, Jack’s distrust of women was attributed to a youthful indiscretion where he had gotten a girl pregnant and had to leave his hometown in shame.

Unique Protagonists: Unlike many radio heroes of the era who were strait-laced and serious, Jack, Doc, and Reggie were portrayed as reckless and exuberant. They were more interested in the thrill of adventure than in righting wrongs, and when they collected a fee, their primary goal was to spend it as quickly as possible. This unconventional approach to heroism added to the show’s appeal and set it apart from other radio dramas of the time.
