I Love Adventure

1948 · 13 episodes · 3 listens

I Love Adventure was a short-lived revival of the popular I Love a Mystery radio series, created and written by Carlton E. Morse. The show aired for 13 episodes on the ABC network in 1948, continuing the adventures of the three protagonists from the original series - Jack Packard, Reggie York, and Doc Long.

After the A-1 Detective Agency closed down due to the events of World War II, the trio went their separate ways. Jack Packard found himself working for a shadowy organization called “The 21 Old Men of 10 Gramercy Park,” which brought him back together with Reggie York to take on various cases and missions. Later on, the reliable and womanizing Doc Long also rejoined the team.

The Stars

The main stars of I Love Adventure were Michael Raffetto as Jack Packard, Tom Collins as Reggie York, and Barton Yarborough as Doc Long.

Raffetto and Yarborough had previously portrayed these characters in the original I Love a Mystery series, while Tom Collins took over the role of Reggie from the previous actor.

Key Dates

  • I Love Adventure debuted on ABC on April 25, 1948 and ran for 13 episodes.
  • It concluded on July 18, 1948.
  • The series was a revival of the earlier I Love a Mystery program, which had aired from 1939 to 1944.
  • After the short-lived run of I Love Adventure, the original I Love a Mystery series was revived once more on the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1949 until 1952.

Other Information

While I Love Adventure did not achieve the same level of popularity and acclaim as its predecessor, I Love a Mystery, the series was still well-received by critics. Variety praised the “crisp and professional” writing, acting, and direction of the show.

The series continued the pulp fiction adventure and mystery themes that had made I Love a Mystery so successful, with the three protagonists facing off against Nazis, international gangs, and other nefarious threats. However, the shorter format and more episodic nature of I Love Adventure meant that the rich character development and intricate plotting of the original series was not always fully realized.

Nonetheless, I Love Adventure remains an interesting footnote in the history of old-time radio, providing fans of the I Love a Mystery franchise with additional adventures of their beloved characters.

The series also demonstrated Carlton E. Morse’s continued ability to craft compelling mystery and adventure stories for the medium of radio.
