Dragnet

Dragnet is an iconic American media franchise created by actor and producer Jack Webb, following Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Detective Joe Friday and his partners as they conduct by-the-book police work and solve crimes in Los Angeles. Originating as a radio drama on NBC in 1949, Dragnet has been adapted into several successful television shows and films, though the franchise’s popularity has reduced since Webb’s death in 1982.

The name is derived from the police term “dragnet,” a system of coordinated measures for apprehending criminals or suspects. Dragnet is perhaps the most famous and influential police procedural crime drama in American media history. Webb’s aims in Dragnet were for unpretentious acting and a realistic depiction of policing. The series portrayed police work as dangerous and heroic, and helped shape public perception of law enforcement in the 20th century, improving the public’s opinion of police officers.

The Stars

Jack Webb starred as the lead character, Sergeant Joe Friday, throughout the franchise’s various incarnations. Friday was known for his no-nonsense, matter-of-fact approach to police work, often delivering the famous line “Just the facts, ma’am” (though he never actually said that exact phrase on the show). Webb’s co-stars included Ben Alexander as Officer Frank Smith in the original 1951-1959 television series, and Harry Morgan as Officer Bill Gannon in the 1967-1970 revival.

Other Information

Dragnet is known for its distinctive four-note brass and timpani theme music, which has become an iconic part of American popular culture. The show’s opening narration, “The story you are about to hear is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent,” also became a recognizable element of the franchise.

The series often drew from actual LAPD case files, with many episodes based on real crimes. This attention to realism and authenticity was a key part of Webb’s vision for the show. Dragnet has had a lasting impact on the police procedural genre, influencing countless other crime dramas that followed.

Despite the franchise’s decline after Webb’s death, Dragnet remains a beloved and influential part of American television history. Its cultural impact is such that elements of the series, from the theme music to the catchphrases, are still widely recognized today, even by those unfamiliar with the show itself.
