Abbott & Costello Show

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were one of the most popular comedy duos in the golden age of American radio. Their fast-paced, slapstick routines and clever wordplay made them a hit with audiences, and their radio show became a staple of the 1940s airwaves. The Abbott & Costello Show was a 30-minute weekly comedy program that ran from 1940 to 1949, first on NBC and later on ABC.

The Stars

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were the undisputed stars of the show, playing off each other's strengths to create a dynamic and hilarious partnership. Abbott was the straight man, the stern taskmaster to Costello's bumbling, wide-eyed antics. Costello's shrieks and catchphrases, like "I'm a baaaad boy," were punctuated by Abbott's deadpan sarcasm, a formula that delighted listeners, especially children.

The show also featured a supporting cast of talented character actors and vocalists, including Mel Blanc, Frank Nelson, Sid Fields, Iris Adrian, Martha Wentworth, Sharon Douglas, Verna Felton, and the Delta Rhythm Boys. Announcers Ken Niles, Elvia Allman (as Mrs. Niles), and others were also integral to the show's success.

Key Dates

The Abbott & Costello Show debuted on July 3, 1940 as a summer replacement for The Fred Allen Show on NBC. After a two-year hiatus, the show returned as a regular network program in the fall of 1942 and ran through the spring of 1949, first on NBC and then on ABC.

In 1947, the programs were recorded and made available via transcriptions to stations outside of the regular ABC network, allowing the show to reach an even wider audience.

Other Information

Abbott and Costello's rise to radio stardom was rapid. They had met in 1929 and forged a successful vaudeville and burlesque partnership in the 1930s before being discovered by Kate Smith and appearing on her radio program in 1938. Their slapstick style and clever wordplay, exemplified by their famous "Who's on First?" routine, translated perfectly to the radio medium.

The show's success also boosted the duo's film career, with the radio program supplementing their screen success and vice versa. Hits like Buck Privates, In the Navy, and Hold That Ghost were promoted on the radio show, while the radio exposure helped drive audiences to the theaters.

Despite their on-screen success and popularity, the personal lives of Abbott and Costello were marked by tragedy and financial troubles. Costello was plagued by health issues and personal losses, while Abbott died a pauper after an eight-year audit of his back taxes. Nevertheless, their radio show remains a beloved classic of the golden age of American radio.

Conclusion

The Abbott & Costello Show was a landmark in the careers of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, cementing their status as one of the most popular comedy duos of the 1940s. With their unique blend of slapstick, wordplay, and supporting talent, the show entertained audiences for nearly a decade on both NBC and ABC. While the personal lives of the stars were marked by hardship, their radio program stands as a testament to their comedic genius and the enduring appeal of old-time radio.
