Life With Luigi

1901–1953 · 154 episodes · 283 listens

Life with Luigi was an American radio situation comedy series that aired on CBS Radio from September 21, 1948, to March 3, 1953. The show centered on the experiences of Luigi Basco, a newly arrived Italian immigrant living in Chicago.

Many episodes took place in the night school classes that Luigi attended with other immigrants from different countries, and a common theme involved Luigi’s landlord and sponsor, Pasquale, scheming to get Luigi to marry his daughter Rosa. The series utilized the framing device of Luigi narrating a letter to his mother back in Italy in each episode.

The Stars

Perennial character actor and two-time Academy Award nominee J. Carrol Naish played the lead role of Luigi Basco.

Other main characters included Pasquale, played by Alan Reed, and Miss Spaulding, Luigi’s night school teacher, portrayed by Mary Shipp.

Additional characters included Jimmy, Luigi’s young business associate played by Gil Stratton, and Schultz, a German immigrant and fellow student in Luigi’s citizenship class, portrayed by Hans Conried.

Key Dates

  • Life with Luigi debuted on September 21, 1948.
  • Its final episode aired on March 3, 1953.
  • It was sponsored by Wrigley’s Gum from 1950 until the show’s end in 1953.

Other Information

Life with Luigi was created by Cy Howard, who had earlier created the hit radio comedy My Friend Irma.

The show was popular, successfully competing with Bob Hope’s The Pepsodent Show for most of its run, airing on Tuesdays at 9 PM.

The working title for the show was The Little Immigrant, which was echoed in the sign-off of each episode, “Your lovin-a son-a, Luigi Basco, the li’l immigrant.”

Despite high ratings, the live CBS Television version of Life with Luigi that aired in 1952 was short-lived and was pulled due to pressure from the Italian-American community. CBS attempted to respond to advertisers’ concerns by making changes to the characters and writing, but the revised show was unsuccessful and was cancelled within weeks.

All in all Life of Luigi is a classic and much underrated radio comedy. It has stood the test of time far better than many of its contemporaries and in my opinion is as funny today as it ever was.

If you need some light-hearted relief then you won’t go far wrong with Life of Luigi. It certainly gave Bob Hope a run for his money back in the late 1940s.
