Alan Hewitt

1915–1986 · New York City

Alan Hewitt was a prolific American actor whose career spanned over five decades, leaving an indelible mark on entertainment through his versatile performances across multiple mediums. Though primarily known for his film and television work, Hewitt's early career was deeply rooted in stage performance and included significant contributions to the acting profession.

Early Years and Theatrical Beginnings

Born on January 21, 1915, in New York City, Alan Hewitt discovered his passion for acting at a remarkably young age. His first theatrical experience came at just 10 years old, when he made his acting debut in a school production. This early exposure to performance would set the stage for a remarkable career. Hewitt attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1934, and quickly became involved with the prestigious theater scene in New York. His professional stage career began in 1935 when he first appeared on the New York stage. He was fortunate to work alongside legendary actors Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, touring with them and appearing in multiple productions between 1936 and 1937.

Broadway and Professional Development

Throughout his early career, Hewitt established himself as a talented stage actor. His obituary noted that he "scored his biggest successes on Broadway" in productions like Love's Old Sweet Song and another unnamed play. During this period, he also became actively involved with the Actors' Equity Association, joining in 1934 and serving on its council from 1940 to 1951. Hewitt's commitment to the acting profession extended beyond performance. He was instrumental in establishing employment surveys for performers and frequently advocated for actors' professional rights through letters and articles. This dedication demonstrated his deep understanding of the theatrical ecosystem.

Wartime Service and Transition to Screen

World War II interrupted Hewitt's theatrical career when he served in the US Army from 1943 to 1946. Upon returning, he successfully transitioned into film and television, becoming a highly sought-after character actor. His screen career included appearances in numerous movies and television shows, where he often portrayed authoritative figures like lawyers, professors, and military personnel.

As television became more prominent, Hewitt became an accomplished character actor with an impressive range. He made guest appearances on numerous well-known programs and was particularly noted for his roles in detective and legal dramas. His television work included multiple appearances on shows like Perry Mason, where he played various characters across different episodes.
