Theater Five

1964–1965 · 200 episodes · 277 listens

Theater Five was a multi-genre anthology radio series that aired on ABC from mid-1964 through mid-1965. The program had a unique, slick 1960s feel that marked the end of the Golden Age of Radio, with its racy, Peter Gunn-like theme music and a quicker pace of storytelling that did not rely on household name stars.

The scripts were largely original to Theater Five, though some were adapted from previous radio plays rather than published fiction. Executive producer Ed Byron offered writers above union scale to attract top talent, but the clipped 20-minute format with a commercial break in the middle seriously constrained the writers’ ability to develop complex plots and themes. As a result, the dramas tended to be one-dimensional, with simple storylines that catered to the reduced attention span of 1960s American listeners.

The program directors were a mix of veterans and relative newcomers, including Ted Bell, Warren Somerville, William Gately, Harry Nelson, Fred Foy, and several others. Except for Fred Foy, little is known about the directing or acting backgrounds of these individuals, suggesting they may have been general ABC staff given a chance to direct in order to keep production costs down.

Around 260 episodes were produced, with most falling within the 20-minute format and airing twice daily on weekdays. The series covered a range of genres, from science fiction and dystopian futures to murder mysteries and supernatural tales. While the fast-paced, economical approach limited the depth of the storytelling, the production values remained respectably high, and the series offered a unique window into the evolving tastes of radio drama in the 1960s.

The Stars

Theater Five did not feature any regular stars, instead relying on a rotating cast of character actors. Notable performers who appeared on the series include Elliott Reid, Arlene Francis, Martin Gabel, George Petrie, William Redfield, and Luis Van Rooten.

Some of these actors, such as Reid and Francis, were already well-established in radio, television, and film, while others, like a pre-Incident on US 1 Yaphet Kotto, were just starting to make a name for themselves.

Key Dates

  • Theater Five debuted on August 3rd, 1964.
  • It aired twice daily on weekdays ending on July 30th, 1965
  • The series maintained a consistent schedule throughout its run, with no major breaks or interruptions.

Other Information

While Theater Five did not achieve the same level of popularity or critical acclaim as some of the classic radio drama anthologies of the Golden Age, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolving landscape of American radio in the 1960s. The series’ unique production style, with its emphasis on speed and economy over depth and complexity, reflects the changing tastes and listening habits of the era.

A few Theater Five episodes were based on or adapted from previous radio plays, though the majority of the scripts were original.

While not as well-remembered as some of its Golden Age predecessors, Theater Five represents an important transitional period in the evolution of American radio drama, foreshadowing the medium’s eventual decline in the face of television’s growing dominance.
