Glenn Miller

1938–1944 · 41 episodes · 56 listens

Overview. Glenn Miller was an American big band leader, arranger, composer, and trombonist who rose to fame in the late 1930s and early 1940s.  His civilian band, Glenn Miller and His Orchestra, was one of the most popular and commercially successful musical groups of the Swing era, becoming the best-selling recording band from 1939 to 1942.  Miller’s distinctive musical style, which featured a clarinet playing a melodic line with a tenor saxophone holding the same note while three other saxophones harmonized within a single octave, helped to differentiate his band from many others of the time.

In 1942, at the age of 38, Miller volunteered to join the U.S. Army Air Forces to entertain troops during World War II.  He formed and directed the Major Glenn Miller Army Air Forces Orchestra, which became the forerunner of many U.S. military big bands.  Tragically, Miller went missing in action on December 15, 1944, while on a flight over the English Channel, and was officially declared dead a year and a day later.

Despite his untimely death, Miller’s musical legacy has endured. His recordings, including classics like “Moonlight Serenade,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” and “In the Mood,” have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and continue to be performed by swing, jazz, and big bands worldwide.

The Stars

Glenn Miller was the undisputed leader and driving force behind his civilian and military bands. As a trombonist and arranger, he was responsible for shaping the distinctive sound that made his groups so popular.  While he did not have any regular vocalists in his civilian band, he featured a number of talented musicians, including saxophonist Wilbur Schwartz, who played a key role in developing the band’s signature clarinet-led reed section.  In his military band, Miller also included a full string section, which was an evolutionary step beyond his earlier civilian ensemble.

Key Dates

  • Glenn Miller and His Orchestra made their debut in 1937 and quickly rose to prominence, becoming the best-selling recording band from 1939 to 1942.
  • The band gave its final performance on September 27, 1942, before Miller enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces.
  • Miller formed and directed the Major Glenn Miller Army Air Forces Orchestra in 1943, which went on to perform extensively in Europe during the war, providing entertainment and boosting morale for American troops.
  • Tragically, Miller disappeared on December 15, 1944, while on a flight over the English Channel, and was officially declared dead a year and a day later.

Other Information

Glenn Miller was a highly influential figure in the history of American music. His distinctive sound and arrangements were widely imitated by other bandleaders, and his music has been performed by countless swing, jazz, and big bands over the decades. After Miller’s death, the Glenn Miller Orchestra was revived under the leadership of various musicians, including Tex Beneke, who had been a member of the original civilian band. The military band’s legacy also lives on through the Airmen of Note, a jazz ensemble within the United States Air Force Band.

Miller’s life and music have been the subject of numerous memorials, festivals, and even a 1953 biopic film, The Glenn Miller Story, starring James Stewart.  His birthplace in Clarinda, Iowa, and the town of Fort Morgan, Colorado, where he attended high school, both host annual festivals celebrating his legacy.  The Glenn Miller Archives at the University of Colorado Boulder also houses a wealth of recordings, memorabilia, and scholarly resources related to the bandleader’s life and work.
