Light-Up Time

1949–1950 · 70 episodes · 34 listens

Light-Up Time was an enjoyable music program that aired on the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) in the late 1940s. Hosted by the smooth-talking Frank Sinatra, the show featured a mix of popular tunes and special guest stars, providing a perfect complement to a relaxing smoke of a Lucky Strike cigarette.

The program’s title was a nod to the sponsor, Lucky Strike cigarettes, whose slogan “Be Happy - Go Lucky” perfectly captured the laidback, after-work vibe of the show. Light-Up Time offered 15 minutes of easy listening music entertainment, with Sinatra’s velvet voice guiding the audience through the musical selections.

The Stars

Frank Sinatra was the undisputed star of Light-Up Time, using his natural charisma and smooth delivery to engage the audience.

The program also featured regular co-hosts, including the acclaimed soprano Dorothy Kirsten, baritone Jeff Clark, and bandleader Skitch Henderson and his orchestra, who provided the musical accompaniment.

Don Wilson was the announcer.

Key Dates

  • Light-Up Time first aired in 1949 and ran through 1950, with Sinatra hosting the majority of the episodes.
  • The program was part of the AFRS lineup, which meant it was primarily broadcast to American troops stationed overseas, though it likely found an audience stateside as well.

Other Information

In addition to Sinatra’s hosting duties, Light-Up Time featured a variety of popular tunes from the era, ranging from classic standards to contemporary hits. The program’s association with Lucky Strike cigarettes was a natural fit, as Sinatra himself was known to be a devoted smoker.

The relaxed, after-work atmosphere of Light-Up Time made it a perfect complement to the Lucky Strike brand, which promoted its cigarettes with the slogan “Be Happy - Go Lucky.”

The program’s blend of music, Sinatra’s effortless charm, and the Lucky Strike sponsorship created a winning formula for listeners seeking a pleasant, unwinding musical experience.
