Night Beat

1949–1970 · 76 episodes · 139 listens

Night Beat was an American radio drama series that aired from February 6, 1950 to September 25, 1952 on the NBC radio network. The series was a crime drama that followed the adventures of Randy Stone, a reporter who worked the night beat for the fictional Chicago Star newspaper. Each episode would find Stone encountering a variety of criminals, eccentrics, and troubled souls as he searched the city for strange stories waiting for him in the darkness.

The series was known for its vivid writing and the sympathetic performance of lead actor Frank Lovejoy as Randy Stone. While most episodes leaned towards suspense, crime, and thriller themes, Night Beat also featured occasional humorous or sentimental stories. Each episode would end with Stone at his desk, typing up a news story based on his latest exploits and shouting for the copy boy to deliver it to an editor.

Interestingly, The Ted Carter Murder Case dated May 19th 1949, starred Edmond O'Brien as 'Hank Mitchell', night reporter on 'The Examiner'. This was the first pilot for the series, and the story followed Mitchell hunting down the killer of an old friend.

Then on 13th January 1950, there was Frank Lovejoy's audition where the main character is called 'Lucky Stone', who finds himself playing cat and mouse with a killer in a Chicago skyscraper.

The show was eventually rewritten to change the names of both reporter and paper, to the permanent 'Randy' Stone, and that version was broadcast a few months later on 8th May 1950, again called Elevator Caper, and starring Frank Lovejoy.

The Stars

Frank Lovejoy starred as the lead character of Randy Stone, the tough and streetwise reporter who worked the night beat for the Chicago Star. Lovejoy’s powerful and believable performance as a hardened journalist with an underlying humanity was widely praised by critics and fans.

The series also featured a strong supporting cast that included actors such as Parley Baer, Jack Kruschen and Barney Phillips.

Donald Rickles served as the show’s announcer.

Key Dates

  • Night Beat debuted on February 6, 1950 and ran for over two years.
  • The final episode aired on September 25, 1952.
  • The series was sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer and Wheaties during its run.

Other Information

In addition to the popular radio series, Night Beat also spawned a television adaptation. In 1953, an episode titled “Search in the Night” aired as part of the anthology series Four Star Playhouse, with Frank Lovejoy reprising his role as Randy Stone. However, the proposed weekly television series based on Night Beat never materialized.

In 2012, the Old Time Radio distributor Radio Archives published an ebook anthology titled Night Beat: Night Stories, featuring six new stories set in the world of Night Beat. The audiobook version of the anthology was narrated by Harlan Ellison. This release helped to introduce the classic radio drama to a new generation of listeners and fans of old-time radio.

Overall, Night Beat is remembered as a high-quality crime drama that combined suspenseful storytelling with well-developed characters and strong performances, particularly from lead actor Frank Lovejoy. The series has continued to maintain a loyal following among old-time radio enthusiasts and is considered one of the standout examples of the genre.
