Casey, Crime Photographer

1943–1954 · 85 episodes · 458 listens

Casey, Crime Photographer was a popular American radio series that captivated audiences with its thrilling blend of crime, mystery, and photojournalism. The show, which aired on CBS Radio from the 1940s to the 1950s, followed the adventures of Jack “Flashgun” Casey, a crime photographer for the fictional newspaper The Morning Express.

Created by novelist George Harmon Coxe, Casey’s character first appeared in the pulp magazine Black Mask before making his way to the airwaves. The radio series showcased Casey’s knack for solving crimes with the help of his trusty camera and his quick wit.

Alongside reporter Ann Williams, Casey would unravel complex mysteries, often outmaneuvering both criminals and the police. What set Casey, Crime Photographer apart from other crime dramas of its time was its unique setting and atmosphere. Many of the episodes featured Casey and Ann recounting their latest adventures to Ethelbert, the bartender at the Blue Note Cafe. This cozy jazz club served as a recurring backdrop, with the Archie Bleyer Orchestra and the Teddy Wilson Trio providing a smooth, jazzy ambiance that became synonymous with the show.

The series masterfully blended elements of hard-boiled detective fiction with the emerging technology of photography, creating a distinctive niche in the radio drama landscape. Casey’s profession as a crime photographer allowed for innovative storytelling, as he often uncovered crucial evidence through his camera lens, adding a visual element to the audio medium.

The Stars

Casey, Crime Photographer featured a rotating cast of talented actors who brought the characters to life over its various incarnations. The titular role of Casey was portrayed by several actors throughout the show’s run, each bringing their own unique interpretation to the character.

Matt Crowley was one of the first to step into Casey’s shoes, setting the tone for the quick-thinking, street-smart photographer. Jim Backus, later famous for his role as Mr. Howell on Gilligan’s Island, had a brief stint as Casey, adding his distinctive voice to the character. However, it was Staats Cotsworth who became most closely associated with the role, portraying Casey for a significant portion of the series’ run.

The character of Ann Williams, Casey’s resourceful and intrepid reporter sidekick, was primarily brought to life by Jan Miner. Miner’s portrayal of Ann was so memorable that she even reprised the role in the television adaptation of the series. Her chemistry with Casey and her ability to hold her own in dangerous situations made Ann a fan favorite.

John Gibson’s portrayal of Ethelbert the bartender provided a constant presence throughout the series. His character served not only as a sounding board for Casey and Ann’s theories but also as a source of comic relief and homespun wisdom.

Other notable cast members included Bernard Lenrow as Captain Logan, representing the official law enforcement perspective, and various announcers such as Tony Marvin and Bill Cullen, who helped set the scene and mood for each episode.

Key Dates

Casey, Crime Photographer had a complex broadcast history, with several iterations and name changes throughout its run. Here are some key dates in the series’ timeline:

  • July 7, 1943: The series debuts on CBS under the title Flashgun Casey.
  • April 8, 1944: The show is renamed Casey, Press Photographer, marking a slight shift in emphasis.
  • July 11, 1945: Another title change occurs, with the series now known simply as Crime Photographer.
  • March 20, 1947: The show adopts its most well-known title, Casey, Crime Photographer.
  • November 16, 1950: The fourth series under this title concludes.
  • January 13, 1954: After a hiatus, the show returns to the airwaves as Crime Photographer.
  • April 22, 1955: The final episode of Casey, Crime Photographer is broadcast, marking the end of the radio series.

It’s worth noting that between the fourth and fifth radio series, a live television version of the show was produced and aired, bringing Casey’s adventures to the small screen.

Other Information

Casey, Crime Photographer was more than just a radio show; it was a multimedia franchise that spanned several decades and formats. The character’s popularity led to adaptations and spin-offs in various media, showcasing the enduring appeal of the crime-solving photographer.

Literary Origins: Before hitting the airwaves, Casey appeared in over 20 short stories published in Black Mask, a renowned pulp magazine that was also home to other iconic detective characters. George Harmon Coxe, Casey’s creator, went on to write five novels featuring the character from the 1930s to the 1960s, expanding the Casey universe beyond the radio episodes.

Film Adaptations: Casey’s popularity led to two film adaptations in the 1930s: Women Are Trouble and Here’s Flash Casey. These movies introduced the character to cinema audiences and helped establish Casey as a multi-media personality.

Comic Books: In 1949, Timely Comics (which would later become Marvel Comics) published four issues of a comic book tie-in to the radio show. The comic, illustrated by Vernon Henkel, allowed fans to visualize Casey’s adventures for the first time.

Television Series: The success of the radio show led to a television adaptation in 1951. The TV series starred Richard Carlyle and later Darren McGavin as Casey, with Jan Miner reprising her radio role as Ann Williams. However, the television version was short-lived, running only until 1952. Interestingly, Darren McGavin, who played Casey in the latter part of the TV run, was quite critical of the show, stating that it was “so bad that it was never re-run, and that’s saying something when you recall the caliber of television programs in those days.”

Sponsorship: Like many radio shows of the era, Casey, Crime Photographer had various sponsors throughout its run. Notable among these were Anchor Hocking, a glassware company, and Toni Home Permanents. The show was also sponsored by Philip Morris cigarettes for a time, reflecting the advertising norms of the period.

Cultural Impact: The character of Casey, with his blend of hard-boiled detective work and photojournalism, represented a unique figure in the landscape of crime fiction. The series’ use of a jazz club as a recurring setting, complete with live music, added a distinctive atmosphere that set it apart from other crime dramas of the time.

Legacy: While Casey, Crime Photographer may not be as well-remembered as some other radio dramas of its era, it played a significant role in the development of the crime genre across multiple media. The character’s journey from pulp fiction to radio, film, television, and comics demonstrates the versatility and enduring appeal of the concept.

The series remains a fascinating artifact of mid-20th century American popular culture, blending elements of journalism, detective work, and jazz culture into a unique and entertaining package that continues to intrigue old-time radio enthusiasts and crime fiction fans alike.
