Cecil and Sally

1901 · 50 episodes · 75 listens

Cecil and Sally was a popular old-time radio soap opera comedy series that aired from 1928 to 1933. The show featured the musical comedy duo of Johnny Patrick and Helen Troy, who portrayed the title characters. The program debuted on the short-lived ABC network’s West Coast connection and later moved to KPO and NBC, where it ran until 1933.

The series was one of the earliest radio shows to be nationally syndicated through the use of electronic transcription discs, allowing it to reach audiences across the country. Cecil and Sally was known for its lighthearted, humorous storylines and the endearing chemistry between the two lead characters.

Patrick wrote the scripts and sang, while Troy sang and played the piano and organ, providing the musical accompaniment.

The Stars

Johnny Patrick (born John Patrick Goggan in 1905) was the driving force behind Cecil and Sally, writing over a thousand scripts for the series during its run. In addition to his work on the radio show, Patrick was a successful playwright and Hollywood screenwriter, adapting the novel “The Teahouse of the August Moon” for the stage in 1953, which earned him a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award. He also wrote screenplays for numerous films, including “Three Coins in the Fountain,” “Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing,” and “The Shoes of the Fisherman.”

Helen Troy, the co-star of Cecil and Sally, was a San Francisco-born comedienne who appeared in several other radio programs after the series ended, including “Texaco Town” on CBS Radio in 1937. Troy had a brief career in motion pictures, making her film debut in George M. Cohan’s “Song and Dance Man” and appearing alongside stars like Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, and Spencer Tracy. Sadly, she passed away at the young age of 38 in 1942.
