G.I. Journal

1943–1970 · 70 episodes · 32 listens

G.I. Journal was a popular World War II-era radio series that aired from 1943 to 1946. It was a combination situation comedy and variety show, produced by the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) and aimed at entertaining American troops stationed around the world. The premise of the show was that each episode featured a celebrity guest editor putting out a weekly newspaper for the troops, with comedy sketches, musical performances, and other entertainment woven throughout.

The show was centered in Hollywood, which at the time was a hub of military training and staging. AFRS programming was developed for “local” broadcast in the various theaters of the war, with recordings often sent overseas by mail rather than relying on unreliable shortwave transmissions. G.I. Journal was one of the most popular shows to come out of the AFRS, featuring a rotating cast of famous hosts and guest stars.

The Stars

The guest editors who put out the weekly “G.I. Journal” newspaper were a who’s who of Hollywood talent during the war years.

Hosts included comedians like Bob Hope, Groucho Marx, and Edgar Bergen, as well as singers like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Kay Kyser.

Other notable guests included actors such as William Bendix, Jack Benny, and Lucille Ball. These stars would not only host the show, but also participate in comedy sketches and introduce musical performances.

The show also featured regular cast members, including voice actor Mel Blanc as the hapless Private Sad Sack, and a variety of service orchestras and musical acts like the Army Air Force Training Command Orchestra led by Glenn Miller.

Key Dates

  • G.I. Journal debuted in 1943 and ran until 1946, providing entertainment and morale-boosting content for American troops throughout World War II.
  • The series is known to have been in production from 1943 to the end of the war in 1945, and may have continued for a short time after that.

Other Information

G.I. Journal was part of the larger effort by the Armed Forces Radio Service to bring entertainment and a taste of home to American servicemen and women stationed around the world during the war. The show’s format, with celebrity guest editors and a mix of comedy, music, and variety, was designed to boost morale and provide a welcome distraction from the realities of combat.

The show’s popularity was such that it spawned a spin-off series called G.I. Jive, which focused more on music and featured the character of “G.I. Jill” as the host. G.I. Journal also had the distinction of being one of the few AFRS programs to be recorded and distributed on transcription discs, rather than relying on live shortwave broadcasts, allowing it to reach a wider audience of troops.

While G.I. Journal has largely been forgotten today, it remains an important part of the history of American radio and the role it played in supporting the troops during World War II.

The show’s mix of comedy, music, and celebrity guests provided a much-needed morale boost for soldiers, sailors, and airmen serving far from home, and helped to keep their spirits high during the darkest days of the conflict.
