Dr Christian

1937–1953 · 156 episodes · 284 listens

Dr. Christian was a popular American radio medical drama series that aired on the CBS radio network from November 7, 1937 to January 6, 1954. The series centered around the thoughtful and philosophical small-town physician Dr. Paul Christian, played by actor Jean Hersholt, and his nurse Judy Price, as they dealt with the personal problems and medical issues of the residents of the fictional town of River’s End.

The program was unique in that by the mid-1940s, the majority of the scripts were contributed by listeners, with an annual script-writing competition being the highlight of each season. The radio series was a major success, continuing on CBS for over 16 years.

The Stars

Jean Hersholt was the star of the series, portraying the kind-hearted and compassionate Dr. Paul Christian. Hersholt had earlier played a similar character, Dr. John Luke, in a series of films based on the real-life Dr. Dafoe and his care of the famous Dionne quintuplets.

Rosemary DeCamp co-starred as Nurse Judy Price, Dr. Christian’s loyal assistant who helped him deal with the various medical and personal crises that arose in the town.

Other regular cast members included Lurene Tuttle and Kathleen Fitz.

Key Dates

  • Dr. Christian debuted on CBS radio on November 7, 1937 as The Vaseline Program: Dr. Christian of River’s End, sponsored by the Chesebrough Manufacturing Company’s Vaseline products.
  • The series continued on CBS until January 6, 1954, making it one of the longest-running radio medical dramas.
  • In 1956, the character of Dr. Christian was adapted for television, with a 39-episode syndicated series that featured a younger “Dr. Mark Christian” portrayed by Macdonald Carey as the nephew of the original Dr. Christian.
  • This TV series aired until 1957.

Other Information

The radio series was unique in that it allowed listeners to contribute the majority of the scripts by the mid-1940s, with an annual script-writing competition being a highlight of each season. The top prize for the competition was $2,000, with several $500 runner-up prizes. Among the later winners were future acclaimed writers Rod Serling and Harlan Ellison.

Jean Hersholt was so strongly identified with the role of Dr. Christian that he received a significant amount of mail from listeners seeking medical advice. There were also various spin-off projects, including Hersholt co-writing a Dr. Christian novel and starring in a series of six family films as the character from 1939 to 1941.

The radio series was sponsored by Vaseline products throughout its run on CBS, with the opening theme music being “Rainbow on the River.”

The program was also unique in that it dealt with a wide range of medical and personal issues facing the residents of the small town of River’s End, often in a thoughtful and philosophical manner that resonated with listeners.
