Diamond Dramas

1935–1947 · 25 episodes · 16 listens

Diamond Dramas Radio was a pioneering program that brought the stories of famous diamonds to life, weaving intricate narratives of royalty, wealth, love, and deception. A series of dramatic tales emerged that captivated audiences with the allure and mystery of the world’s most precious gems

The series was the brainchild of Sidney S. Fox, an entrepreneur from Salt Lake City, Utah. Fox had made his fortune through the production and marketing of “Miracle Diamonds” - a laxative product made from the salt of the nearby Great Salt Lake. Recognizing the public’s fascination with all things diamond-related, Fox invested $35,000 to create and produce a series of 26 dramatic radio shows that would chronicle the histories of the world’s most renowned diamonds.

The stories featured in Diamond Dramas Radio spanned centuries and continents, delving into the captivating tales behind some of the most famous gems, such as the Great Mogul, the Austrian Yellow Diamond, the Orloff Diamond, and the Koh-i-Noor. Each episode transported listeners to a different era, immersing them in the intrigues and scandals that surrounded these priceless treasures.

The Stars

While Diamond Dramas Radio did not have a regular cast of stars, the series featured a talented ensemble of actors who brought the diverse characters to life.

Listeners were captivated by the performances of Jonathan Firth, Tracy Ann Oberman, Shirley Dixon, and Burt Caesar, among others, as they navigated the complex narratives and brought the stories to vivid life.

Key Dates

  • Diamond Dramas Radio debuted in 1945 and ran for several years.
  • The final episode aired in 1947.
  • During its run, the series was sponsored by the Davidson & Licht Jewelry Company and Gruen Watch, further cementing its connection to the world of diamonds and luxury.

Other Information

Beyond the captivating stories, Diamond Dramas Radio also provided listeners with a unique glimpse into the history and cultural significance of diamonds. The series explored the role of these precious stones in the lives of royalty, the wealthy, and the eccentric, offering a fascinating perspective on the power and allure of these coveted gems.

The program’s success was not limited to its radio audience, as the stories were later adapted for other media. Several of the Diamond Dramas episodes were adapted into short films, further expanding the reach and popularity of the series.

Overall, Diamond Dramas Radio stands as a testament to the enduring fascination with diamonds and the power of storytelling. Through its captivating narratives and talented performances, the series transported listeners to a world of opulence, intrigue, and the timeless allure of the world’s most precious stones.
