Dangerously Yours

1944–1945 · 12 episodes · 35 listens

Dangerously Yours was a half-hour radio drama series sponsored by Vicks and broadcast in 1944. The show centered around romance, adventure, and intrigue, with Hollywood star Victor Jory as the leading man.

Each episode of Dangerously Yours featured Jory in a new story adaptation, ranging from tales of pirates and espionage to historical dramas and romantic adventures. The series focused heavily on the romantic elements, with much of the airtime devoted to the lead characters murmuring sweet nothings to one another, while the action and suspense played more of a supporting role.

In October 1944, the series underwent a title change, becoming known as Matinee Theater. An additional 25 episodes were produced under the new name, some of which were repeats of earlier installments. Of these 25 episodes, 22 are known to exist today.

The Stars

Victor Jory was the primary star of Dangerously Yours, portraying the lead role in each episode. Jory was a prolific actor, known for his roles in films such as Gone with the Wind, The Ox-Bow Incident, and Spartacus. His deep, commanding voice and rugged good looks made him well-suited for the romantic hero parts featured in the series.

Key Dates

Dangerously Yours debuted on July 2nd,1944 and ran for 16 episodes that year, with 11 of those episodes still available to listeners today. The final episode aired on October 15th,1944, then the series was retitled Matinee Theater and an additional 25 episodes were produced, 22 of which are known to exist.

Other Information

Dangerously Yours was sponsored by the Vicks Chemical Company, makers of Vicks nose drops, vapor rubs, and other products. The series was part of a larger trend in old-time radio of sponsored programming, where advertisers would fund the production of shows in exchange for prominent mentions of their products.

While Dangerously Yours did not spawn any spin-offs or adaptations, the series was part of a larger wave of romantic adventure dramas that were popular on radio in the 1940s. Shows like The Falcon, The Shadow, and The Adventures of Philip Marlowe also blended elements of romance, mystery, and suspense, catering to listeners' desires for thrilling stories with a touch of amorous intrigue.
