Lone Ranger, The

The Lone Ranger is a classic American Western radio series that first premiered on WXYZ radio in Detroit, Michigan on January 31, 1933. The show was created by George W. Trendle and developed by writer Fran Striker, and it quickly became a hit, captivating audiences with its tales of a masked Texas Ranger and his Native American companion, Tonto, as they fought for justice in the American frontier.

The series ran for over two decades, spawning a popular television adaptation, numerous films, books, and comic books, cementing the Lone Ranger’s status as an enduring icon of American popular culture.

The Lone Ranger, whose true identity was that of John Reid, was the sole survivor of a group of six Texas Rangers ambushed by a gang of outlaws.  Nursed back to health by the Native American Tonto, Reid donned a mask and set out to bring the outlaws to justice, using his keen intellect, marksmanship, and the aid of his trusty horse, Silver.

Along with Tonto, the Lone Ranger embarked on a never-ending quest to protect the innocent and uphold the law in the Wild West, often facing off against corrupt officials, ruthless bandits, and other nefarious foes.

The Stars

The Lone Ranger was portrayed by several actors over the course of the radio series, with Earle Graser playing the role for the majority of the show’s run, from 1933 to 1941. 

After Graser’s untimely death in a car accident, veteran actor Brace Beemer took over the role, voicing the Masked Man until the series’ end in 1956.

Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s loyal companion, was consistently voiced by actor John Todd throughout the radio show’s entire run.
