Unexpected

1948 · 38 episodes · 88 listens

Unexpected was a quarter-hour radio series produced by Hamilton-Whitney Productions, a Los Angeles-based company that specialized in producing programs for syndication. The series offered tense stories of mystery and suspense, usually centering on the thoughts or actions of a single person. What set Unexpected apart was its twist endings - just when the listener thought the story was resolved, the announcer would declare “You think the story is over, don’t you? But wait! Fate takes a hand. Wait…for the Unexpected!” This gimmick was designed to keep audiences engaged, as they waited to discover the true conclusion to each tale.

The Stars

Unexpected did not have any regular starring cast members, instead relying on a rotating ensemble of experienced radio and film actors. Some of the more prominent performers featured on the series included:

Barry Sullivan: A prolific character actor, Sullivan appeared in numerous films and television shows over his long career. On Unexpected, he showcased his versatility by portraying a variety of roles, from a mercy killer to a blackmail victim.

Marsha Hunt: Known for her work in films like The Human Comedy and Raw Deal, Hunt brought her dramatic skills to Unexpected, playing characters ranging from a debutante to a woman planning to murder her husband.

Lurene Tuttle: A veteran radio actress, Tuttle was a familiar voice to listeners, having appeared on shows like The Whistler and Suspense. On Unexpected, she demonstrated her range, portraying everything from a grieving widow to a conniving blackmailer. Tom Neal: Best remembered for his role in the film noir classic Detour, Neal lent his talents to Unexpected, playing characters who found themselves in unexpected and dangerous situations.

Others included Tom Neal, Lyle Talbot, Binnie Barnes, Marjorie Riordan, Jackie Cooper, and Jack Holt all lent their talents to the show. With its small budgets but skilled cast and crew, Unexpected was able to deliver engaging stories of mystery and suspense that captivated listeners.

Key Dates

Unexpected aired in 1948. The show was part of the post-war boom in syndicated radio programming that saw the rise of many small production companies like Hamilton-Whitney.

Other Information

In addition to its twist endings, Unexpected was notable for its use of experienced radio performers who could quickly adapt to a variety of roles. This allowed the series to maintain a high level of quality despite its modest budgets. The show’s focus on suspense and mystery also aligned it with the film noir sensibilities that were popular in Hollywood at the time, making Unexpected a product of its era.

While Unexpected may not have achieved the same level of fame as some of the more well-known radio drama series of the era, it nonetheless provided listeners with an entertaining and engaging listening experience. The series’ unique format and skilled cast have helped it endure as a forgotten gem of old-time radio.
