Rocky Jordan

1945–1951 · 92 episodes · 306 listens

Rocky Jordan was a thrilling adventure-drama radio series that transported listeners to the exotic streets of Cairo, Egypt. The show followed the exploits of Rocky Jordan, an American expatriate and owner of the Café Tambourine, as he found himself embroiled in mysteries, crimes, and international intrigue. Blending elements of hard-boiled detective fiction with the allure of a foreign setting, Rocky Jordan captivated audiences with its unique blend of suspense, romance, and cultural intrigue.

The series originally aired on CBS from October 31, 1948, to September 10, 1950, and then returned for a brief run from June 27, 1951, to August 22, 1951. Rocky Jordan was a spiritual successor to an earlier program called A Man Named Jordan, which ran from 1945 to 1947 on the CBS West Coast network and was set in Istanbul rather than Cairo.

At its core, Rocky Jordan was a character-driven drama that relied heavily on the charisma and wit of its titular protagonist. Rocky, described as a “soldier of fortune,” was a complex character with a mysterious past that often hinted at some trouble back in his hometown of St. Louis. This air of mystery added depth to the character and intrigue to the storylines, as listeners wondered what circumstances had led Rocky to his current life in Cairo.

The show’s writers, Larry Roman and Gomer Cool, went to great lengths to create an authentic atmosphere, using real street names and landmarks from Cairo to ground the stories in a sense of realism. This attention to detail, combined with Richard Aurandt’s evocative musical score and carefully crafted sound effects, created a rich, immersive experience that transported listeners to the bustling streets and shadowy alleys of Cairo.

The Stars

The role of Rocky Jordan was primarily played by veteran radio actor Jack Moyles, who brought a rugged charm and world-weary wisdom to the character. Moyles’ portrayal of Rocky as a tough but fair-minded American trying to navigate the complexities of life in a foreign land resonated with listeners and helped establish the character as a memorable radio hero.

In the brief 1951 revival of the series, Hollywood film star George Raft took over the role of Rocky Jordan. Raft, known for his portrayals of gangsters and tough guys in films, brought his own unique flavor to the character, though his tenure was short-lived.

A constant presence throughout the series was Jay Novello in the role of Captain Sam Sabaaya of the Cairo Police. Sabaaya served as both ally and foil to Rocky, often working alongside him to solve crimes but also frequently suspecting him of wrongdoing. Novello’s portrayal of Sabaaya as a competent and determined Egyptian police officer added depth to the show and provided a counterpoint to Rocky’s more impulsive American approach to problem-solving.

Other recurring characters included Chris, the bartender at the Café Tambourine (often voiced by Lawrence Dobkin), and Sergeant Greco (played by Lou Krugman), one of Sabaaya’s ambitious and somewhat antagonistic subordinates who harbored a particular dislike for Rocky.

Other Information

Rocky Jordan was notable for its atmospheric portrayal of Cairo, which set it apart from other detective and adventure series of the time. The writers relied heavily on a book called The Pocket Guide to Egypt, produced by the US Army for servicemen stationed there during World War II, to add authenticity to their depictions of the city.

The show’s premise bore some similarities to the classic film Casablanca, with Rocky Jordan filling a role not dissimilar to Humphrey Bogart’s Rick Blaine. Both were American expatriates running cafes in exotic North African locations, often getting involved in intrigue and romance. However, Rocky Jordan carved out its own unique identity through its focus on mystery-solving and its more action-oriented plots.

The Café Tambourine, Rocky’s base of operations, was described in the show’s introduction as being located “not far from the Mosque Sultan Hassan” and was portrayed as a hub of activity “crowded with forgotten men, and alive with the babble of many languages.” This vivid description helped set the stage for the exotic adventures that would unfold in each episode.

One of the most praised aspects of Rocky Jordan was its music. Composed by Richard Aurandt, the show’s score was considered exceptional for its ability to evoke the mysterious and exotic atmosphere of Cairo. This attention to musical detail significantly enhanced the listening experience and contributed to the show’s immersive quality.

In February 1951, there were discussions about adapting Rocky Jordan into a television series starring George Raft, to be produced by Raft’s own company. However, this project never materialized, leaving Rocky Jordan as a purely radio phenomenon.

The series’ format typically involved Rocky becoming embroiled in “a crime, a mystery, a beautiful woman, or a combination of the three.” This formula provided a flexible framework for a wide variety of stories, from straightforward detective tales to more complex international intrigues.

Rocky Jordan stands as a prime example of how radio drama could transport listeners to far-off locales and immerse them in thrilling adventures. Its blend of hard-boiled detective tropes with exotic settings and international intrigue created a unique and memorable listening experience that continues to captivate old-time radio enthusiasts to this day.

The show’s attention to atmospheric detail, compelling characters, and intricate mysteries make it a standout series in the golden age of radio drama.
