Jeff Regan, Investigator

1948–1950 · 48 episodes · 195 listens

Jeff Regan, Investigator was a hard-boiled detective radio drama that aired on CBS from 1948 to 1950. The series followed the exploits of private investigator Jeff Regan, who worked for the International Detective Bureau run by Anthony J. Lyon. Known for its gritty noir style and sharp dialogue, the show quickly became a favorite among fans of crime dramas during the golden age of radio.

The series stood out for its unique narrative style, with Regan often referring to his boss Lyon as “the Lion” and himself as “the Lion’s eye.” This clever wordplay added a layer of wit to the otherwise serious tone of the show. The cases Regan tackled were typically complex and dangerous, involving murder, blackmail, and other high-stakes crimes that kept listeners on the edge of their seats.

Jeff Regan, Investigator is particularly notable for being one of the earliest nationwide programs to feature Jack Webb, who would later go on to create and star in the iconic police procedural Dragnet. Webb’s portrayal of Regan in the show’s first incarnation set the tone for the hard-boiled detective character that would become a staple of the genre.

The Stars

The show’s run was marked by two distinct periods, each featuring different lead actors in the role of Jeff Regan. In its initial run from July 10, 1948, to December 18, 1948, Jack Webb starred as the titular investigator. Webb brought a tough, no-nonsense approach to the character, establishing Regan as a formidable and intelligent detective.

His portrayal was complemented by Wilms Herbert as Anthony J. Lyon and Barton Yarborough as Joe Canto, Regan’s co-worker.

After a brief hiatus, the show returned on October 5, 1949, with a new lead. Frank Graham, a versatile voice actor known for his work on The Adventures of Cosmo Jones, took over the role of Jeff Regan. Graham’s interpretation of the character maintained the hard-boiled essence established by Webb while bringing his own unique flair to the role.

In this second incarnation, Frank Nelson, famous for his work on The Jack Benny Program, took over the part of Anthony J. Lyon, adding a new dynamic to the relationship between Regan and his boss.

It’s worth noting that for several weeks during the show’s second run, Paul Dubov filled in for Frank Graham as Jeff Regan, though the reasons for this temporary change remain unclear.

Key Dates

  • July 10, 1948: Jeff Regan, Investigator debuts on CBS with Jack Webb in the lead role.
  • December 18, 1948: The first run of the series concludes, with Webb departing the show.
  • October 5, 1949: The series returns to the airwaves with Frank Graham as the new Jeff Regan.
  • August 27, 1950: The final episode of Jeff Regan, Investigator airs on CBS.
  • September 2, 1950: Frank Graham tragically commits suicide, leading to the permanent cancellation of the series. At the time of his death, five more broadcasts were scheduled but never completed.

Other Information

Production Team: The show boasted a talented team behind the scenes. Writers included E. Jack Neuman, Larry Roman, Jackson Gillis, William Froug, William Fifield, and Gilbert Thomas. The series was directed by Sterling Tracy, Gordon T. Hughes, and Cliff Howell, ensuring a consistently high-quality production throughout its run.

Announcer Changes: Throughout its run, Jeff Regan, Investigator featured several announcers, including Bob Stevenson, Bob LeMond, and Joe Walters, each contributing their distinctive voices to the show’s atmosphere.

Webb’s Departure: According to writer William Froug, Jack Webb’s departure from the show at the end of 1948 was due to a salary dispute. Webb reportedly asked for more money than the producers were willing to pay, leading to his dismissal from the program.

Graham’s Versatility: Frank Graham, who took over the lead role in 1949, was well-known in the radio industry for his versatility. Prior to Jeff Regan, Investigator, he had created and starred in his own detective series, The Adventures of Cosmo Jones, showcasing his ability to handle complex character roles.

Popularity and Unexpected End: Despite the change in lead actors, the second version of Jeff Regan, Investigator remained popular with listeners and was expected to be renewed for another season. However, Frank Graham’s untimely death on September 2, 1950, brought an abrupt and permanent end to the series. Interestingly, Graham had completed an episode scheduled to air the night after he died, but CBS chose not to broadcast it out of respect.

Legacy: While Jeff Regan, Investigator had a relatively short run compared to some other radio dramas of the era, it left a lasting impact on the detective genre. The show’s influence can be seen in later works, particularly in the hard-boiled detective characters that would populate radio, television, and film in the following decades. Jack Webb’s involvement in the series also served as a stepping stone to his creation of Dragnet, which would become one of the most iconic police procedurals in both radio and television history.

Jeff Regan, Investigator remains a prime example of the noir detective genre in radio drama. Its sharp writing, memorable characters, and the stellar performances of its lead actors continue to captivate old-time radio enthusiasts. The show’s ability to maintain its popularity despite a change in its lead actor is a testament to the strength of its concept and the talent of all involved in its production.

For fans of classic radio dramas and detective stories, Jeff Regan, Investigator offers a thrilling journey into the gritty world of 1940s private eye investigations.
