Father Knows Best

1948–1954 · 112 episodes · 1,247 listens

Father Knows Best is an American sitcom created by Ed James that aired on radio and television in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.

The series, which began on radio in 1949, followed the lives of the Anderson family, a middle-class family living in the fictional town of Springfield.

The show was known for its wholesome, idealized portrayal of family life in post-war America. Each episode typically revolved around the Andersons navigating the everyday challenges and joys of family life, with Jim often providing sage advice and guidance to his children. The series was praised for its realistic and relatable depiction of family dynamics, and it became a beloved classic of American radio and television.

The Stars

Robert Young was the undisputed star of Father Knows Best, playing the role of Jim Anderson, the family patriarch. Young had already established himself as a successful film and television actor before taking on the role, and his warm, authoritative presence was central to the show’s appeal. June Whitley co-starred as Margaret Anderson, Jim’s wife, who was often portrayed as the voice of reason and compassion in the family, later replaced by Jean Vander Pyl. The three Anderson children - Betty, Bud, and Kathy - were played by Rhoda Williams, Ted Donaldson and Norma Jean Nilsson, respectively, and each brought their own unique personalities and storylines to the show. Eleanor Audley, Herb Vigran and Sam Edwards played the roles of the neighboring family Elizabeth and Hector Smith and their son Billy Smith.

Key Dates

  • Father Knows Best first debuted on NBC radio on August 25th, 1949.
  • The show aired for thirty minutes each Thursday until November 19th, 1953.
  • The television version of the show premiered on CBS in October 1954, where it ran for one season before being canceled.
  • However, the series was then picked up by NBC, where it remained for three more seasons.
  • After being canceled by NBC in 1958, Father Knows Best returned to CBS for its final two seasons, ending its run in 1960 after a total of 203 episodes.

Other Information

The television version of Father Knows Best was sponsored by various companies over the course of its run, including General Foods, Scott Paper Company, and Lever Brothers. The show was so popular and influential that in 1959, the U.S. Department of the Treasury commissioned a special 30-minute episode to promote the purchase of savings bonds.

The show’s enduring popularity has led to various homages and references in popular culture. The town of Springfield in The Simpsons is named after the fictional town in Father Knows Best, and the exterior of the Anderson family home was used in the CBS daytime series The Young and the Restless in 2010.

Reruns of the show have continued to air on various television networks and streaming platforms over the years, ensuring that the Andersons and their wholesome family values remain a beloved part of American television history.
