Doris Singleton

1919–2012 · New York City, U.S.

In the vibrant landscape of mid-20th century entertainment, Doris Singleton emerged as a versatile and beloved performer who seamlessly navigated the worlds of radio, television, and stage. Her career spanned decades, making her a quintessential talent of the entertainment industry's most transformative era.

Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Born Dorthea Singleton on September 28, 1919, in New York City, she displayed artistic promise from an early age. Before becoming a renowned actress, Singleton trained as a ballerina, dancing for three seasons in the mid-1930s with the newly formed "Ballet Theatre", which would later become a prestigious national dance company. Her artistic versatility became evident early on, as she transitioned from dance to vocal performance, beginning her show business career as a vocalist in the late 1930s with a prominent orchestra.

Radio: The Launching Pad of Her Career

Singleton's radio career quickly took flight in New York, where she became a sought-after performer. She appeared as a guest star and in regular roles on numerous hit radio shows, demonstrating her remarkable range and adaptability. Notably, she played Young's girlfriend, Betty Dittenfeffer, on one popular radio program, and portrayed Ruth Henshaw in another radio adaptation. A pivotal moment in her career came in 1948 during a guest appearance on a radio show, where she met a connection that would define much of her professional life. This encounter led to her long-standing professional relationship with Lucille Ball, marking the beginning of a significant chapter in her entertainment career.

Television and Iconic Collaborations

Singleton's television career was particularly distinguished by her recurring role in I Love Lucy, where she played Carolyn Appleby in ten episodes between 1953 and 1957. Her television debut came in 1953 when she played Gloria Harper in an episode of a popular series. Interestingly, her final appearance on I Love Lucy coincided with an episode featuring Superman actor George Reeves. Her collaboration with Lucille Ball continued throughout the decades. In 1966, she appeared in The Lucy Show as Ruth Cosgrove, an actress hired to help Lucy with a television stunt. She was even initially considered for a regular role in Ball's third series, though the premise was ultimately abandoned.

Later Career and Legacy

Throughout her career, Singleton appeared in numerous television shows, showcasing her remarkable versatility. She played sympathetic neighbors, mothers, and various recurring characters in shows like The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy, and many others. Her last major acting role was in Deadly Messages (1985), though she continued to work in advertising and voice-overs. At the time of her death in June 2012, Singleton held the distinction of being the last surviving major recurring adult cast member from the "Lucy" shows. She passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 92, leaving behind a rich legacy in entertainment.
