Bonita Granville

b. 1923 · New York City, U.S.

An American film actress and television producer.

Bonita Granville was a multifaceted entertainer whose career spanned film, television, and radio, making her a notable figure in mid-20th century American entertainment. Born on February 2, 1923, in New York City, she emerged as a talented child actress before expanding her creative pursuits into producing and broadcasting.

Early Life and Hollywood Beginnings

The daughter of vaudevillian performers Rosina and Bernard Granville, Bonita Granville was destined for the entertainment world from an early age. She began her stage career at just three years old, quickly transitioning to film by age nine. Her breakthrough came with the 1936 film These Three, where her portrayal of a malicious child earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress - making her the youngest nominee at the time. Throughout the late 1930s, Granville became particularly famous for her role as Nancy Drew in a series of detective films. She portrayed the iconic girl detective in four movies between 1938 and 1939, co-starring with Frankie Thomas as Ted Nickerson. These films solidified her reputation as a talented young actress with remarkable screen presence.

Radio and Broadcasting Career

While primarily known for her film work, Granville also made significant contributions to radio broadcasting. Her radio appearances were selective but noteworthy. In 1945, she appeared on the popular radio drama Suspense in an episode titled "Bank Holiday". Additionally, in 1952, she was featured on the Family Theater program in an episode called "The Promise". Her radio work demonstrated her versatility as a performer, showcasing her ability to translate her dramatic skills from film to audio medium. Though her radio career was not as extensive as her film work, these appearances highlighted her adaptability and continued relevance in entertainment.

Transition to Production and Television

In 1947, Granville married Jack Wrather, a film producer, which marked a significant turning point in her career. Together, they became a powerful entertainment industry couple. Granville transitioned from acting to producing, most notably working on the long-running television series Lassie from 1959 to 1973, where she was not only a producer but also occasionally appeared as a narrator. Her television work extended beyond Lassie, with appearances in various anthology series like Armstrong Circle Theatre, Lux Video Theatre, and Playhouse 90 throughout the 1950s. These roles demonstrated her continued presence in the entertainment industry even as she moved away from child acting.

Legacy and Later Years

Bonita Granville's career was remarkable for its breadth and adaptability. From child actress to producer, she navigated the changing landscape of entertainment with grace. Her contributions were recognized when she and her husband were posthumously inducted as Disney Legends in 2011. Granville passed away on October 11, 1988, in Santa Monica, California, leaving behind a rich legacy in film, television, and radio. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 for her contributions to the motion picture industry.
