Sandra Gould

1916–1999 · New York City, U.S.

Sandra Gould was a versatile performer whose career spanned radio, film, television, and writing. Best known for her high-pitched, distinctive voice and her role as Gladys Kravitz on Bewitched, she maintained a steady presence in entertainment over more than five decades.

Early Life and Radio Roots

Sandra Gould was born on July 23, 1916, in Brooklyn, New York. She entered the world of performance at a young age, eventually making her way into radio. During the 1940s, she became a regular on Duffy’s Tavern, playing Miss Duffy, the flirtatious daughter of the never-seen owner. She also appeared on other radio shows, including A Date with Judy and programs with Jack Benny, showcasing her comedic timing and character flair. Her voice—bright, slightly shrill, and unforgettable—made her a natural for radio character work. She continued working steadily in the medium for many years, becoming a well-known figure in old-time radio comedy and drama.

Film and Television Career

In the late 1940s, Sandra made her way into film. One of her earliest appearances was in T-Men (1947), followed by a small role as a phone operator in Romance on the High Seas (1948). She built up a number of bit parts through the ’50s, often cast as talkative receptionists, nosy neighbors, or gossipy telephone operators. Television offered her even more opportunities. She appeared on I Married Joan in the early 1950s, playing a recurring character. Over the years, she guested on many classic shows, including I Love Lucy, The Flintstones, The Twilight Zone, The Lucy Show, I Dream of Jeannie, and Gilligan’s Island. In 1966, she took over the role of Gladys Kravitz on Bewitched, replacing the original actress. Her over-the-top, nosy-neighbor portrayal became iconic. She stayed with the series for five seasons, and later reprised the role in the Tabitha spin-off. In addition to her television work, she continued acting in films, including a supporting part in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966).

Writing, Personality, and Later Life

Aside from acting, Gould also pursued writing. In 1960, she authored a book titled Always Say Maybe, a tongue-in-cheek “modern girl’s guide” to life and relationships. She later published another book called Sexpots and Pans. Her writing reflected her witty, humorous personality and her ability to turn a sharp, observant eye on everyday relationships. Gould was married twice. Her first husband was Larry Berns, a broadcasting executive, with whom she had a son, Michael. After Berns’s death, she married Hollingsworth Morse, a television and film director. She identified as Jewish. On July 20, 1999, just three days before her 83rd birthday, Sandra Gould died in Burbank, California, of a stroke following heart surgery.

Legacy and Influence

Sandra Gould may not have often been the lead, but she left a strong impression through her character work. Her performance as Gladys Kravitz on Bewitched remains her most enduring legacy, defining a comedic archetype of the meddling, shrill-voiced neighbor. In radio, her work on shows like Duffy’s Tavern exhibited her skill for rapid-fire dialogue and eccentric characters. Her long career—rooted in radio, branching into film, television, and writing—demonstrates a remarkable adaptability. She remains a memorable figure in classic American entertainment, especially for fans of radio and vintage TV comedy.
