Margaret Draper

1916–2011 · Spanish Fork, Utah, U.S.

In the vibrant landscape of mid-20th century radio broadcasting, Margaret Ruth Draper emerged as a versatile and dedicated actress whose career spanned several decades of dramatic storytelling. Born in the small town of Spanish Fork, Utah, on November 20, 1916, Draper would become a notable figure in the golden age of radio, bringing characters to life through her distinctive voice and compelling performances.

Early Years and Theatrical Beginnings

Margaret Draper's journey into performance began early, growing up as the third of six children in a family that would support her artistic aspirations. After graduating from university, she took a bold step that would define her career: traveling to New York City with just $38.50 in her purse and a single bag, determined to pursue a career in theater. Her initial days in the city were humble, working in a music store while nurturing her theatrical dreams. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Draper immersed herself in the theater scene of the Eastern United States. She worked with prestigious theater companies including the Wharf School of the Theater in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the Green Lake Players in Buffalo, New York, and the Chekhov Theater Studio in Ridgefield, Connecticut. These formative years provided her with a solid foundation in dramatic performance that would serve her well in her radio career.

Radio Career and Notable Performances

Draper's radio career truly took flight in 1947 when she secured her first radio role in the program Joe Powers of Oakville. Her talent quickly became apparent, and she began to establish herself in the competitive world of radio drama. She appeared in significant productions, including a notable presentation of Peer Gynt, where she was voted one of the most promising actresses of the year. Her breakthrough came when she was cast as Liz Dennis in a popular radio program, a role she maintained until around 1954. Subsequently, she won the part of Linda Pepper in another radio series. In 1952, she portrayed Eva Petri in a notable radio production, further cementing her reputation as a versatile radio actress.

Expanding Horizons and Broadway

While radio remained her primary medium, Draper also ventured into Broadway, securing supporting roles in stage productions. Her theatrical credits included performances during the 1967-1968 season, demonstrating her ability to transition between different performance platforms.

Later Life and Legacy

As the landscape of entertainment changed, Draper adapted. In 2003, she moved to an independent living community in Salt Lake City, maintaining connections to her roots. In the fall of 2010, she moved to her son's home, and in the spring of 2011, she settled in a care facility where she passed away on October 14, 2011, at the age of 94. Margaret Draper's career represents a remarkable journey through the golden age of radio, embodying the spirit of versatility and dedication that characterized performers of her era. Her ability to bring characters to life across radio, theater, and other media made her a respected figure in mid-century American entertainment.
