John Conte

1915–2006 · Palmer, Massachusetts, U.S.

In the vibrant landscape of mid-20th century entertainment, John Conte emerged as a versatile performer who seamlessly navigated radio, television, and stage. Born in Palmer, Massachusetts, on September 15, 1915, Conte would become a quintessential entertainer whose career spanned four decades, leaving an indelible mark on American broadcasting.

Early Years and Artistic Beginnings

Growing up in a family with Italian roots, John Conte discovered his passion for performance early. After his family moved to Los Angeles when he was just five years old, Conte's artistic talents began to flourish. During his school years, he distinguished himself as a remarkable performer, spending three years as the top entrant in Shakespearean competitions. His natural talent and dedication quickly translated into professional opportunities. Conte's initial foray into entertainment was multifaceted, taking roles in theater, radio, and as a singer. He embraced every opportunity, taking "every role offered to him – juvenile, leading man, character" in his early theatrical work.

Radio: The Foundation of a Broadcast Career

Conte's radio career launched him into the national spotlight. Joining a Los Angeles radio station, he rapidly advanced to become a network announcer within two years. His early work included notable programs that defined the golden age of radio. He was a regular on The Grape Nuts Program (1937–1938), working alongside comedy legends George Burns and Gracie Allen. His versatility shone through in his numerous radio roles. Conte served as master of ceremonies for the Maxwell House program and was an announcer for multiple shows including It Happened in Hollywood and The Screen Guild Show. These early experiences established him as a reliable and engaging broadcast personality.

Television: A Pioneering Presence

As television emerged, John Conte seamlessly transitioned into the new medium. He hosted his own variety program, John Conte's Little Show, on NBC and ABC between 1950 and 1953. His charismatic presence made him an ideal television host, particularly during the early days of color broadcasting. From October 1955 to July 1959, Conte hosted Matinee Theater, a groundbreaking one-hour color anthology program on NBC. This show was critically important in the development of color television, serving as a technical test for new home television installations. His professional demeanor and appealing physical presence made him the perfect host for this innovative program.

Beyond Performance: A Broadcast Entrepreneur

Conte's career extended beyond performance into media ownership. In 1968, he and his third wife Sirpuhe Philibosian Conte launched KMIR, an NBC-affiliated television station in the Palm Springs–Rancho Mirage market. They successfully built the station into the third-largest in the Coachella Valley, eventually selling it after 30 years.

Legacy and Final Years

John Conte's contributions to entertainment were recognized through prestigious honors. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 and was dedicated a Golden Palm Star in 1997. Beyond entertainment, he was a founding sponsor of the Eisenhower Medical Center and helped establish cultural institutions in Palm Desert. On September 4, 2006, Conte passed away in Rancho Mirage, California, at the age of 90, leaving behind a rich legacy of performance and broadcasting innovation.
