Guest Star

1947–1955 · 200 episodes · 66 listens

Guest Star was a popular old-time radio series that aired during the 1940s,1950s and 1960s showcasing a variety of entertainment acts and celebrity guests. The show was primarily focused on promoting the sale of war bonds and supporting the United States’ efforts during World War II. Each episode featured a mix of musical performances, comedy sketches, and interviews with famous personalities of the era.

The format of Guest Star was that of a classic variety show, with the main purpose of the program being to encourage listeners to purchase war bonds. Major singing sensations of the time, such as Frank Sinatra and Perry Como, crooned their tunes on the series, and movie stars such as Vic Damone and Ozzie and Harriet were interviewed and shared tidbits from their lives in skits.

Jokes from comedians such as Red Skelton and Fibber McGee and Molly had their home audiences rolling on the floor, and there were musical numbers from the big bands.

All of these elements worked together to help promote the sale of war bonds by the United States Treasury. During the 1940s the war effort was in high swing, and there were many radio programs at the time that addressed selling bonds and how to be patriotic, win the war, and bring our soldiers home.

The Stars

Guest Star featured a rotating cast of celebrity guests, with no single star or group of stars that appeared regularly throughout the series’ run. The show was considered a variety type, and stars flocked to the format to help show their patriotic leanings and support the war effort. Episodes were approximately fifteen minutes each and had a great following of fans.

Key Dates

  • Guest Star debuted in 1943 and continued airing new episodes throughout the remainder of World War II, ending its run in the 1960s.
  • The series maintained a consistent schedule during this period, with new episodes being broadcast on a weekly basis. There were no significant breaks or changes to the show’s cast or format during its run.

Other Information

Guest Star was sponsored by the United States Treasury Department, with the primary goal of the program being to encourage listeners to purchase war bonds to support the country’s military efforts. The show was widely popular and successful in this regard, with the Treasury Department reporting significant increases in bond sales following the airing of new Guest Star episodes.

While Guest Star did not spawn any spin-offs or adaptations, the series’ format and approach of using celebrity guests to promote patriotism and wartime initiatives was emulated by numerous other radio programs of the era.

The show’s success also led to increased visibility and opportunities for many of the stars who appeared as guests, further cementing their status as major entertainment figures of the 1940s.
