Dear Ned and Joy, I read your immersion email and thought something wrote would help. Thank you for being here.
Those Days of Yesteryear
In a living room corner, a warm dial glowed Of laughs, of tears, of fears “Return with us now,” the radio called, “To those days of yesteryear.”
After school homework of math, of English So much there was to learn But every week for sports and history I’d listen to Bill Stern
Still I remember the darkened room Of bravery I’ll not boast In the Inner Sanctum I shivered and shuddered As Raymond said, “This is your host!”
Captain Midnight, Jack Armstrong Airwave heroes of my youth With Jack, Doc, Reggie and Superman They stood for goodness and truth
Though life can be beautiful, this wasn’t the rule For the ladies of the soaps Helen Trent languished, and Pepper Young anguished While Ma Perkins brought new hope
We learned to laugh by listening in To Benny and Fibber and Molly To Amos, To Andy and Fred Allen too George, Gracie, and Bergen and Charlie
We even learned just what to eat For strength and keeping minds keen T’was Wheaties and lots of Kellogg’s Pep Washed down with Ovaltine
Our cowboys never said goodbye “So long” were the words they chose With a “Hiyo Silver!” or “Happy Trails” Or “King, this case is closed.”
“This is London,” Ed Murrow proclaimed And reported our men in the fight As Gabriel Heater proudly said “Ah yes, there’s good news tonight!”
So, I’ll wave a flag for Hudson High And remember with fondness and tears When we gathered ‘round the radio set In those days of yesteryear.
