We've got a real treat for you this week – a look back at a much-loved old-time radio program: The Ave Maria Hour.
Brought to you by the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, this wasn't just another show. It was like a weekly visit into stories about saints, the lessons from the Bible, and the strength of believing. And now, you can listen to that magic right here on RUSC!
Way back on April 26, 1935, this show first aired on WOR radio in New York. It quickly became a favorite, with around a million listeners tuning in each week! Can you imagine sitting by your radio – maybe an old Philco or a Bakelite set – and being taken to another time and place? Each episode was carefully put together with great stories and a respectful feel, making you think and feel deeply.
While you might not have heard famous Hollywood stars on The Ave Maria Hour, it had a wonderful group of actors who brought the Bible and the lives of saints to life. The scripts were really well-written, looked after by the Franciscan Friars themselves, so every show was smooth and moving.
The Ave Maria Hour was more than just something to listen to. It became an important part of people's lives. The Franciscan Friars used the show to support the amazing work of St. Christopher’s Inn, their home for people without shelter. The program was so powerful that it even inspired big trips to Graymoor, the peaceful home of the Friars, for many years.
This show was a real success, reaching so many people. Over its long run, which ended in 1969, you could hear it on over 350 radio stations across the country. It even reached our brave servicemen and women through the Armed Forces Radio Service. In 1959, it won a special award called the Golden Bell Award, given by the one and only Ed Sullivan. This showed just how well-made the show was and how much it touched its listeners.
