The Green Valley Line

1930 · 26 episodes · 37 listens

The Green Valley Line is “the story of a back-country railroad in the early years of the 20th Century”. For years the shareholders of the little railroad have fought against the efforts of the big eastern capitalists seeking to control the Green Valley Line. The series is a sometimes romantic and often adventurous story of the lives of small time people in the America of that time.

The show features simple, direct dialogue and minimal sound effects, with the great sounds of trains and occasional railroad office noises like typewriters providing the main audio backdrop.

The hero of The Green Valley Line is Bill Reed, who is developing the growing Green Valley using a telegraph and telephone to manage train orders, railroad hands, freight shipments, and a gang of operatives intent on sabotaging the line’s growth.

Bill’s father, Jacob Reed, may be a wealthy businessman with a deceitful plan.

Assisting Bill is his “Gal Friday”, Kerry, whose sweet, sincere dialogue delivery provides a nice counterpoint to the railroad operations.

Kerry’s father, referred to as “Pop”, is a bit of a duffer but proves smarter than he seems in figuring out Bill’s plans. The railroad hands are mostly Irish, judging by their names and accents, and the show is filled with enjoyable details about railroad equipment and operations.

The Stars

While The Green Valley Line does not appear to have had any major stars, the main characters of Bill Reed, Kerry, and their respective fathers play central roles in the show’s storylines.

The actress portraying Kerry is noted for her “sweet, sincere dialogue delivery”, while the actors voicing Bill and the two fathers bring a sense of realism and regional flavor to their performances.

Key Dates

  • The series was syndicated sin the 1930's.

Other Information

The Green Valley Line is described as an “adult serial series” that would likely appeal to railroad buffs and lovers of regional radio history. Beyond these basic details, little additional information could be found about the show’s sponsors, any related media adaptations, or its overall popularity and reception.

However, the unique regional flavor and focus on railroad operations and equipment make The Green Valley Line an intriguing example of the diversity of old-time radio programming.

All 26 episodes each approximately 15 minutes long are available to listen to on RUSC. Enjoy!
