Lonesome Gal

1951 · 12 episodes · 5 listens

Lonesome Gal was a popular old-time radio program that aired from 1947 to the mid-1950s. The show featured a sultry-voiced disc jockey known only as the “Lonesome Gal” who would serenade her male listeners with romantic music and intimate, flirtatious banter. The show was created by Jean King, a native of Dallas, Texas who had tried to make it as an actress in Hollywood but returned to the Midwest, where she pitched the Lonesome Gal concept to a radio station in Dayton, Ohio. King’s breathy, seductive voice and persona as a “lonely girl” looking for companionship struck a chord with male listeners, and the show soon gained a large following and was syndicated to over 50 stations across the country.

The Stars

Jean King was the sole star of Lonesome Gal, playing the role of the mysterious, masked “Lonesome Gal” who would open each episode with a sultry greeting like “Sweetie, no matter what anybody says, I love you better than anybody in the whole world.”

King kept her identity secret for the first few years of the show, wearing a mask to public events, which only heightened the anticipation of her listeners to learn who the Lonesome Gal really was.

Key Dates

  • Lonesome Gal debuted on WING radio in Dayton, Ohio on October 13th, 1947 and was initially only heard locally.
  • In 1949, the show was syndicated and began airing nationally, eventually reaching over 50 stations across the country.
  • King’s identity as the Lonesome Gal was not revealed until 1953, four years after the show had gone into national syndication.
  • The show continued airing until the mid-1950s.

Other Information

Lonesome Gal was sponsored by various companies over the years, including Red Top Beer/Ale and Phillip Morris. King’s intimate, flirtatious style of hosting the show and her use of pet names for her listeners like “muffin” and “baby” were a big part of the show’s appeal. She would also often work local references and landmarks into the show to personalize it for different markets.

King was married to radio producer Bill Rousseau, who helped promote the show and get it into national syndication. At the height of its popularity, King was recording up to 300 episodes per week to be distributed to the various stations carrying the show. She also released a theme song single called “Lonesome Gal” that became a hit.

Though most episodes of Lonesome Gal have been lost over time, some recordings are still available online for listeners to enjoy this unique and pioneering old-time radio program.
