Incredible But True

1901 · 80 episodes · 30 listens

Incredible But True was a short-form radio drama series that aired from 1950 to 1951 on the Mutual Broadcasting System. The show dramatized strange, mysterious, and unexplained occurrences from around the world, with each episode presenting a self-contained story that was, as the title promised, “incredible but true.” Hosted by the distinctive voice of Ken Nordine, the series used dramatic organ music and sound effects to heighten the sense of the uncanny and the supernatural, as it delved into tales of disappearances, premonitions, supernatural phenomena, and other bizarre real-life events.

The Stars

Ken Nordine was the primary host and narrator of Incredible But True, lending his deep, resonant voice to introduce each episode and guide listeners through the strange and unsettling narratives. Nordine was a prolific voice actor and radio personality, known for his work on numerous other programs, as well as his pioneering “word jazz” recordings that blended poetry and improvised music. His narration was a crucial element of Incredible But True, heightening the sense of mystery and unease that permeated the show.

Key Dates

  • Incredible But True debuted in 1950 and ran for one season, concluding in 1951.
  • The series was syndicated, with both 15-minute and 3-minute versions of the program being distributed to radio stations.

Other Information

Incredible But True was produced by the “Unusual Features Syndicate” and was part of a broader trend in the 1940s and 1950s of radio programs that dramatized strange, unexplained, and often supernatural occurrences. The series shared thematic similarities with other popular shows of the era, such as Ripley’s Believe It or Not and Lights Out, which also explored the realm of the uncanny and the inexplicable.

While Incredible But True may not have achieved the same level of fame and longevity as some of its contemporaries, the series remains an intriguing and often entertaining example of the “strange but true” genre in old-time radio.

Its use of Nordine’s distinctive narration, coupled with the dramatic presentation of each bizarre tale, has helped to cement its place in the annals of classic radio drama.

There are 80 episodes extant.
