Speed Gibson

Speed Gibson of the International Secret Police was an exciting radio adventure series that captivated young listeners in the late 1930s. This thrilling show followed the exploits of Speed Gibson, a 15-year-old aviation enthusiast who becomes involved with the International Secret Police through his uncle, Clint Barlow. The series combined elements of mystery, espionage, and globe-trotting adventure to create a compelling narrative for its audience.

Written by Virginia Cooke, Speed Gibson aired weekly from January 2, 1937, to May 25, 1940, producing a total of 178 episodes. Each episode ran for approximately 15 minutes, providing a perfect dose of excitement for its young listeners. The show’s premise centered around Speed’s induction into the world of international crime-fighting and his subsequent adventures battling nefarious villains across exotic locales.

The series was divided into two main story arcs. The first 100 episodes, titled “The Menace of the Octopus,” chronicled Speed’s initiation into the International Secret Police and the team’s pursuit of the enigmatic criminal mastermind known as the Octopus throughout the Orient. The remaining 78 episodes, “Speed Gibson and the Atlantian Syndicate,” continued the adventure as Speed and his companions ventured into Africa, still in hot pursuit of the elusive Octopus.

Speed Gibson stood out among other radio dramas of its time for its blend of youthful enthusiasm and international intrigue. The show’s creators skillfully wove together elements of aviation, short-wave radio, and global adventure to create a series that was both educational and entertaining for its young audience. Speed himself was portrayed as a relatable protagonist – a typical American boy with extraordinary interests and abilities that allowed him to participate in high-stakes adventures alongside adult characters.

The Stars

While there is some uncertainty regarding the exact casting of Speed Gibson, it is believed that several talented voice actors brought the characters to life. Howard McNear, known for his later work on The Andy Griffith Show, is thought to have portrayed Speed’s uncle, Clint Barlow.

John Gibson took on the role of Barney Dunlap, Speed’s sidekick known for his colorful catchphrases like “Suffering wangdoodles!”

The role of Speed Gibson himself may have been played by Elliott Lewis, though this has not been definitively confirmed. Lewis, a prolific radio actor and producer, is also believed by some to have voiced Splinters, one of the Octopus’s henchmen.

Other Information

Speed Gibson featured a memorable opening theme that set the tone for each episode’s adventure. The sound of an airplane engine could be heard, followed by the urgent voice of an air traffic controller repeating “Ceiling zero… ceiling zero… ceiling zero!” This dramatic introduction immediately transported listeners into the world of high-flying adventure that awaited them.

The show’s format of 15-minute episodes was common for children’s radio programs of the era. This shorter runtime allowed for more frequent broadcasts and made it easier for young listeners to follow the story without losing interest. The serialized nature of the show, with its overarching storylines spanning multiple episodes, encouraged regular listening and built anticipation for each new installment.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Speed Gibson is that all 178 episodes are believed to have survived intact. This is a rarity for radio programs of its era, as many shows from the golden age of radio have been lost or exist only in fragmentary form. The preservation of the complete Speed Gibson series allows modern listeners to experience the entire adventure as it originally aired.

The character of Speed Gibson represented an idealized version of American youth during the late 1930s. His interest in cutting-edge technologies like aviation and short-wave radio reflected the fascination with scientific and technological progress that was prevalent at the time. By making its young protagonist an active participant in international affairs, the show also tapped into the growing awareness of global issues that would soon become even more prominent with the outbreak of World War II.

Speed Gibson was part of a broader trend of juvenile adventure series that were popular on radio during this period. Shows like Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy and Captain Midnight similarly featured young protagonists involved in globe-spanning adventures. These programs not only entertained but also often included educational elements, introducing young listeners to geography, science, and current events through the lens of exciting stories.

The International Secret Police organization featured in the show was a fictional creation, but it played into the public’s fascination with espionage and international intrigue. The late 1930s saw increasing global tensions, and stories of spies and secret agents were becoming more prevalent in popular culture. Speed Gibson offered a youth-oriented take on these themes, allowing its young audience to imagine themselves as part of a world of international mystery and adventure.

While Speed Gibson did not transition to television as some other radio properties did, its influence can be seen in later adventure series aimed at young audiences. The combination of a youthful protagonist, exotic settings, and ongoing battles against colorful villains would become a staple of children’s entertainment for decades to come.

The legacy of Speed Gibson of the International Secret Police lives on as a prime example of the creativity and excitement that characterized the golden age of radio.

Its mix of adventure, education, and youthful enthusiasm continues to captivate old-time radio enthusiasts and offers modern listeners a window into the entertainment and values of pre-World War II America.
