Magic Island

Magic Island was a captivating science-fantasy radio serial that captured the imaginations of listeners in the late 1930s and 1940s. This thrilling adventure series followed the journey of wealthy widow Patricia Gregory as she embarked on a 14-year search across the South Pacific for her long-lost daughter, Joan. The show’s premise was built around a mysterious island populated by scientifically advanced people, hidden away in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

The series began with Patricia receiving a tantalizing tip about a white girl living on this enigmatic island. This information reignited her hope of finding Joan, who had been presumed lost at sea when she was just one year old. The Gregory family yacht had been shipwrecked near the 30th parallel south, and young Joan, lashed to a lifeboat, had vanished without a trace.

Magic Island expertly blended elements of science fiction, fantasy, and adventure, creating a unique listening experience for its audience. The show’s 130 fifteen-minute episodes, all of which have survived to this day, chronicled the reunion of mother and daughter and their subsequent adventures on the extraordinary island. One of the most intriguing aspects of the story was the island’s ability to submerge itself to avoid detection, adding an extra layer of mystery and wonder to the narrative.

Targeted primarily at a juvenile audience, Magic Island offered a perfect mix of excitement, suspense, and futuristic concepts that appealed to listeners of all ages. The show’s ability to transport its audience to a world of advanced technology and hidden wonders made it a standout in the golden age of radio drama.

The Stars

Magic Island boasted a talented cast that brought its colorful characters to life. Sally Creighton took on the role of Mrs. Patricia Gregory, the determined and wealthy widow whose unwavering belief in her daughter’s survival drove the narrative forward. Creighton’s portrayal captured both the strength and vulnerability of a mother on a seemingly impossible quest.

Rosa Barcelo voiced the character of Cleostra/Joan Gregory, the 15-year-old daughter of Patricia who was found alive and well on the island of Euclidia. Barcelo’s performance had to convey the complex emotions of a young woman torn between two worlds – her past life and the only home she had known for most of her life.

The cast also included Tommy Carr as Jerry Hall, the boy who overheard a crucial radio message from Euclidia regarding Joan, thus setting the wheels of the adventure in motion.

Will H. Reynolds brought Captain Tex Bradford to life, portraying Mrs. Gregory’s right-hand man in her search for Joan. The series implied that both Mrs. Gregory and Captain Bradford were highly connected U.S. government agents, adding an element of intrigue to their characters.

Other notable characters included G-47, the enigmatic scientist who ruled Euclidia, and the “Girl Submarine Commander” Elaine, who commanded the submarine fleet of Euclidia and later became a member of the Gregory party during the series.
