Dick Tracy

1938–1947 · 54 episodes · 49 listens

Dick Tracy is an American comic strip featuring Dick Tracy, a tough and intelligent police detective created by Chester Gould. It made its debut on Sunday, October 4, 1931, in the Detroit Mirror, and was distributed by the Chicago Tribune New York News Syndicate. Gould wrote and drew the strip until 1977, and various artists and writers have continued it since then.

The strip’s popularity also resulted in the creation of numerous Dick Tracy merchandise, including novelizations, toys, and games. In April 1937, a poll of adult comic strip readers in Fortune magazine voted Dick Tracy their third favorite comic strip after Little Orphan Annie and Popeye. However, Dick Tracy was also attacked by some journalists as being too violent, a criticism that would dog Gould throughout his time on the strip.

The Stars

Dick Tracy, the tough and intelligent police detective, is the main star of the series. He is based on U.S. federal agent Eliot Ness and was created by Chester Gould. Over the years, Tracy has been portrayed by various actors in film and television adaptations, including Ralph Byrd, Morgan Conway, and Warren Beatty.

Other regular characters in the strip include Tess Trueheart, Tracy’s love interest, and Junior, Tracy’s adopted son. The strip has also featured a variety of memorable villains, such as Big Boy, a fictionalized version of Al Capone, and the grotesque and exaggerated characters that became a hallmark of Gould’s work.

Key Dates

  • Dick Tracy made its debut on October 4, 1931, and Gould continued to write and draw the strip until his retirement in 1977.
  • The strip’s popularity led to the creation of numerous adaptations, including radio series, film serials, feature films, and television series.
  • In 1946, the two-way wrist radio was introduced in the strip, which would become one of the strip’s most recognizable icons and may have inspired later smartwatch technology.
  • The strip also went through a “space period” in the 1960s, where Tracy and his allies used increasingly advanced technology to combat criminals.

Other Information

Dick Tracy has been the recipient of several awards and honors over the years. Chester Gould won the Reuben Award for the strip in 1959 and 1977, and the Mystery Writers of America honored Gould and his work with a Special Edgar Award in 1980.

The strip has also been the subject of numerous parodies and references in popular culture, including in the comic strip Li’l Abner and the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The character of Dick Tracy has also been the subject of legal battles over the rights to the character, with Warren Beatty successfully asserting his ownership of the rights to the character in the 1990s.

Overall, Dick Tracy has remained a beloved and influential comic strip, known for its distinctive visual style, memorable characters, and gripping crime stories. The strip’s enduring popularity and impact on popular culture have cemented its status as a classic of the medium.
