The origins of NFL broadcasts can be traced back to 1939, when NBC became the first major network to televise an NFL game, a matchup between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Philadelphia Eagles. While the quality of the broadcast was primitive by today’s standards, with a single sideline camera providing the only visual, it marked the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship between the league and the broadcasting industry.

The 1990s and 2000s saw the NFL’s television contracts reach new heights, with the league signing multi-billion dollar deals with the major broadcast networks. In 1998, CBS, Fox, ABC, and ESPN all signed eight-year contracts worth a combined $17.6 billion, ushering in an era of unprecedented revenue for the league. The introduction of the NFL Kickoff game in 2002, which features the defending Super Bowl champions hosting the opening game of the season, has become a highly anticipated annual tradition, with the event being broadcast on national television.
