That Hammer Guy

1953 · 10 episodes · 36 listens

That Hammer Guy was a radio series that brought to life the iconic private detective character of Mike Hammer, created by acclaimed crime novelist Mickey Spillane. Airing on the Mutual/Don Lee Network from 1953 to 1954, the series followed the adventures of the tough, no-nonsense Hammer as he navigated the seedy underbelly of New York City, solving cases and doling out his own brand of justice.

Compared to the hard-boiled private eyes that had come before him, Hammer was a far more brutal and violent detective, with a greater willingness to use lethal force against those who crossed him. The character’s rough edges and unapologetic masculinity were a stark contrast to the more charming male leads that dominated the detective genre on radio at the time.

Each episode featured Hammer’s distinctive narrative voice-over, as well as the inclusion of a number of highly sexualized female characters, known as “Hammer-ettes,” who would often find themselves drawn into the detective’s orbit.

The Stars

Three different actors portrayed the role of Mike Hammer during the series’ run: Larry Haines, George Petrie, and Ted DeCorsia. Haines, who had previously appeared in a variety of radio programs in the 1940s, was the first to take on the role, starring in the majority of the episodes.

The character of Hammer’s loyal secretary, Velda, was played by the versatile actress Jan Miner.

Key Dates

  • That Hammer Guy debuted on January 6, 1953.
  • It concluded on October 5, 1954.

Other Information

The character of Mike Hammer was created by author Mickey Spillane, whose hard-boiled detective novels had become immensely popular in the years following World War II. Spillane himself was an interesting figure, having served as a flight instructor in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the war and later becoming a devout Jehovah’s Witness.

In addition to the radio series, the Hammer character has appeared in numerous films, television shows, and comic books over the years, cementing his status as one of the most iconic private detectives in American popular culture.

The radio adaptations of the Hammer stories were known for their gritty, noir-inspired atmosphere and the unapologetic brutality of the protagonist. While the character’s rough edges were somewhat softened for the medium of radio, the series still managed to capture the essence of Spillane’s vision, with Hammer regularly engaging in acts of violence and sexual escapades that pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable for the time. The inclusion of the “Hammer-ettes” and the detective’s frequent clashes with the social mores of the 1950s also provided a source of comedic relief, as the writers played up the contrast between Hammer’s old-fashioned sensibilities and the changing times.

Despite its relatively short run, That Hammer Guy remains a beloved and influential entry in the annals of old-time radio, offering listeners a glimpse into the dark and dangerous world of one of the most iconic private detectives in American fiction.
