Lum and Abner

1935–1954 · 200 episodes · 650 listens

Lum and Abner was an iconic American radio comedy program that captivated audiences for over two decades. Created by Chester Lauck and Norris Goff, the show first aired in 1931 and continued until 1954, with a brief hiatus in the early 1950s. Set in the fictional town of Pine Ridge, Arkansas, the series followed the misadventures of two country storekeepers, Columbus “Lum” Edwards and Abner Peabody.

The show’s humor was rooted in rural Americana, blending homespun wisdom with comedic situations that often arose from the main characters’ well-intentioned but misguided schemes. Lum and Abner’s attempts to strike it rich or solve the town’s problems invariably led to hilarious complications, much to the delight of their loyal listeners.

Lum and Abner stood out among its contemporaries for its unique approach to character development. Unlike many comedy shows of the era that relied on rapid-fire jokes and punchlines, this series took a more leisurely pace, allowing the humor to develop naturally from the characters and situations. This approach endeared the show to millions of listeners who came to view Lum and Abner as familiar friends rather than distant radio personalities.

The program’s success extended beyond radio, spawning a series of feature films and leaving an indelible mark on American popular culture. The show’s influence was so profound that in 1936, the real-life town of Waters, Arkansas, changed its name to Pine Ridge in honor of the fictional setting of Lum and Abner.

The Stars

Chester Lauck and Norris Goff were the creative geniuses behind Lum and Abner, not only writing the scripts but also performing the majority of the characters on the show. Lauck portrayed Columbus “Lum” Edwards, the more ambitious and scheming of the duo, who often pronounced his name as “Lum Ed’ards.” Goff played Abner Peabody, Lum’s good-natured but somewhat dim-witted partner in their various enterprises.

The versatility of Lauck and Goff was remarkable, as they voiced nearly all the characters in Pine Ridge. Lauck also brought to life Grandpappy Spears and Cedric Weehunt, while Goff portrayed Squire Skimp, Dick Huddleston, and Mousey Gray, among others.

This ability to create a diverse cast of characters with distinct personalities and voices was a testament to their talent and contributed significantly to the show’s success.

The chemistry between Lauck and Goff was palpable, even through the radio waves. Their real-life friendship, which dated back to their childhood in Arkansas, translated into a natural and believable on-air rapport. This authenticity was a key factor in the show’s longevity and popularity.

Other Information

Sponsorship: Throughout its run, Lum and Abner attracted several high-profile sponsors. Quaker Oats was an early backer, followed by Ford Dealers of America. Horlicks Malted Milk sponsored the show from 1934 to 1937, during which time they offered various promotional items including almanacs and fictional Pine Ridge newspapers. Other notable sponsors included Postum cereal and Alka-Seltzer, with Miles Laboratories (makers of Alka-Seltzer and One-A-Day Vitamins) being the longest-running sponsor from 1941 to 1948. Film Series: The popularity of Lum and Abner led to a series of feature films. Between 1940 and 1956, seven movies were produced featuring the beloved characters. These included Dreaming Out Loud (1940), The Bashful Bachelor (1942), Two Weeks to Live (1943), So This Is Washington (1943), Goin’ to Town (1944), Partners in Time (1946), and Lum and Abner Abroad (1956). These films allowed fans to put faces to the voices they had come to love and expanded the Lum and Abner universe beyond radio.

Cultural Impact: The influence of Lum and Abner extended far beyond entertainment. As mentioned earlier, the town of Waters, Arkansas, officially changed its name to Pine Ridge in 1936, embracing its connection to the show. Today, Pine Ridge is home to the Lum and Abner Museum, which preserves the legacy of the show and its creators. The museum, housed in the original Huddleston Store and McKinzie Store buildings, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Preservation: Remarkably for a show of its era, over 1,630 episodes of Lum and Abner have survived and are available to modern listeners. This extensive archive, particularly rich for the period between 1935 and 1948, allows new generations to experience the charm and humor of Pine Ridge.

Legacy: The enduring appeal of Lum and Abner is evident in the continued interest in the show decades after its final broadcast. The National Lum and Abner Society, formed in 1984, has worked to keep the memory of the show alive through newsletters, conventions, and other activities. In 2011, a new Lum and Abner comic strip was launched, bringing the characters to a new medium and a new generation of fans.

Lum and Abner remains a beloved piece of Americana, a window into a simpler time that continues to resonate with audiences today. Its blend of gentle humor, memorable characters, and heartwarming stories has secured its place in the pantheon of classic American radio.
