Don DeFore was a multifaceted performer whose career spanned radio, television, and film, embodying the quintessential mid-20th-century American entertainer. Born Donald John DeFore on August 25, 1913, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he would become a beloved figure in entertainment, known for his versatility and warm on-screen presence.

Early Life and Theatrical Beginnings

Growing up in Cedar Rapids, DeFore came from a family of seven children. His father, Joseph Ervin DeFore, worked as a railroad engineer and local politician, while his mother, Albina Sylvia DeFore, occasionally directed plays at their local church. This early exposure to performance would prove pivotal in shaping his future career. DeFore's educational journey was marked by a diverse range of interests. Initially studying law at the University of Iowa while participating in sports like basketball and track, he gradually discovered his passion for acting. When acting was not a major study at his university, he transferred and won a scholarship, dedicating himself to theatrical arts.

The Road to Professional Performance

In a remarkable early collaboration, DeFore and four fellow students wrote a play called Where Do We Go from Here? This production would become his gateway to professional theater. Touring with stock companies and making his Broadway debut in 1938, DeFore quickly established himself in legitimate theater. His performance in The Male Animal, which ran for eight months on Broadway and on tour, solidified his reputation as a promising stage actor. His transition to film began in 1936 with a bit part in Reunion. Throughout the early 1940s, DeFore appeared in numerous films, earning recognition from exhibitors who voted him the fourth-most promising "star of tomorrow" in 1946.

Radio and Television Stardom

DeFore's versatility shone through his work in radio, performing on programs like Old Gold Comedy Theater. However, he would become most famous for his television roles. His breakthrough came as "Thorny", the friendly neighbor in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet from 1952 to 1957, a role for which he received an Emmy nomination. From 1961 to 1965, he co-starred in Hazel as George Baxter, opposite Shirley Booth. This popular sitcom further cemented his status as a beloved television personality.

Beyond Entertainment: Personal Life and Civic Engagement

Beyond his entertainment career, DeFore was deeply involved in community and political activities. A longtime resident of Brentwood, he served as the area's honorary mayor and was active in various civic organizations. A committed Republican, he supported Ronald Reagan and was appointed to the Presidential Advisory Council. DeFore was also an entrepreneur, operating the Silver Banjo Barbecue in Disneyland's Frontierland from 1957 to 1962, showcasing his multifaceted talents.
