Betsy Palmer

1926–2015 · East Chicago, Indiana, U.S.

An American actress, best known as a regular panelist on the game show I've Got a Secret, and later for playing Pamela Voorhees in the slasher film Friday the 13th.

Betsy Palmer was a versatile American actress whose career spanned television, film, and stage, with a particularly notable presence in mid-20th century entertainment. Though best known for her iconic role in Friday the 13th, Palmer's journey began in the vibrant world of early television and radio, where she established herself as a beloved personality.

Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Born Patricia Betsy Hrunek on November 1, 1926, in East Chicago, Indiana, Palmer came from a family that valued education and creativity. Her mother, Marie Love, was an educator who founded the East Chicago Business College, while her father, Vincent Rudolph Hrunek, worked as an industrial chemist. From an early age, Palmer showed a passion for performance, participating in school plays throughout her childhood. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1944, Palmer initially worked as a stenographer, a job she found unfulfilling. A pivotal moment came when she took an aptitude test at the Chicago YWCA, which revealed her artistic potential. Encouraged by a former New York actor, she began studying with David Itkin and eventually graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago.

Breaking into Television and Radio

Palmer's entry into entertainment was marked by her determination and talent. She began working in summer and winter stock theater, saving $400 to move to New York City with her roommate Sasha Igler. Her breakthrough came quickly when she was "discovered" at a party and joined the cast of a 15-minute weekday television soap opera in 1951. Her television career rapidly expanded, and she became a familiar face on I've Got a Secret, a popular quiz show. Joining the original cast in 1958 and remaining until the show's finale in 1967, Palmer became a beloved panelist. She was the last surviving member of the show's first version's cast.

Diverse Performance Career

Beyond game shows, Palmer's career was remarkably diverse. She appeared in seven Broadway shows, often replacing other actresses in long-running productions. Her television work was extensive, with guest appearances on 73 different programs between 1953 and 2001. Her film career took an unexpected turn when she was cast in Friday the 13th in 1980. Initially dismissive of the project, she later embraced her role as Pamela Voorhees, becoming an unexpected horror icon. Interestingly, she was offered $1,000 a day for ten days of work, which helped her replace a broken-down car.

Later Years and Legacy

As her career progressed, Palmer continued to work in various media. She appeared in television movies, provided voice work for horror films, and maintained her presence in entertainment well into her later years. Her final film performance was in Waltzing Anna in 2007, when she was 81 years old. Palmer passed away on May 29, 2015, in Danbury, Connecticut, leaving behind a rich legacy of performances across multiple mediums. She was not just an actress, but a versatile entertainer who adapted to changing entertainment landscapes throughout her career.
